UPDATE July 16th

Over the next couple of weeks, Shopify will be releasing v2.5 POS Android and v4.8 POS iOS.

What this means for you?

  • All merchants will be able to view your POS apps on their iOS and Android phones and tablets. Please make sure to test the design and functionality of your POS apps on iOS and Android phones and tablets prior to the public release of v2.5 POS Android and v4.8 POS iOS.
  • After v2.5 Android POS and v4.8 iOS POS are released, you will not be able to see your apps on POS until you upgrade. Previous versions (v4.7.X and v2.4.X) will no longer show apps.

As of today, partners with POS Android v2.4.8 and POS iOS v4.6 can beta test their POS apps on Shopify development stores. Specifically, apps that are embedded into Shopify POS will start appearing in each of the following POS integrations:

  • Edit Cart action
  • Order Complete action
  • Full Screen Apps

We encourage you to test the design and functionality of your POS apps on iOS and Android phones and tablets prior to the public release of this feature expected in July of this year.

If you have any questions or need further clarification, don't hesitate to out to us at pos-apps@shopify.com or comment in the thread below!

Thanks for the info Jordan!

Out of curiosity, what exactly is changing with this announcement? If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure I've been able to test POS apps in development stores for a while (though maybe I was actually testing on a live store, it has been a little while). Am I missing something obvious? Certainly a possibility :)

Hi Conrad!

Apps that are embedded in POS are currently only available for merchants to use in the iPad version of POS. With this change, we are bringing those apps to iPhone and Android as well. This Beta phase will give partners a chance to test their POS-embedded apps on phones and make any changes necessary to properly support the smaller form factor.

Ahhhh! Okay awesome, that makes sense :) I didn't realize this was not available on Android tablets or smaller devices. Thanks a bunch for the clarification.

It's not working for us, we keep getting logged out with "Insufficient permissions" message, which doesn't make sense since it does let us login in the first place, and we use the account owner.

Every time we login again, we get auto logged out after a minute or so.

I don't think it's related to this change, but how do we fix it? We tried 2 different dev stores.

We managed only once to be quick enough to launch the app before getting logged out and we think there might be an issue with fetchLocation, but we don't have enough time now to reproduce as we get logged out...

Edit: the above relates to Android POS  v2.4.8 only. On iPad it works fine. We haven't tested iPhone.

Hi Clement!

Can you please send an email to pos-apps@shopify.com with the name of the store you're trying to login to? I'll see if I can figure out what's going wrong.
