Inventory Question

I cant seem to find the answer to this anywhere.  So when I purchase new inventory and track the cost to aquire it in my inventory manager lets say it is $40.  I then maybe a month or so later will occasionally pay an outside vendor a service fee of say $20 to customize the item.  Can I list that fee as an expense for the month or do I have to increase my inventory value now to $60?  Thanks in advance for the help!
