We set up Shopify and tried to get Shopify to work properly, but oddly it is not designed to calculate California sales taxes properly for our situation. We are located in the city of Tustin, CA in Orange County. California expects us to collect sales taxes based on the counties where the product is shipped TO if we have been in that location physically. Since we go to various trade shows and conferences, it's too messy to try and create lists and change them all the time. So we decided to collect, and pay to the state, the sales taxes based on local tax rates regardless of whether we have actually been there. But apparently in Shopify, the only way to charge San Francisco county tax rates is you must set up a 'location' in San Francisco county...and then Shopify, because you have a 'presence' there, will charge actual local rates. So to get Shopify to calculate rates properly, we must create bogus 'locations' in every possible taxing district so Shopify then charges accurate local taxes. Why doesn't Shopify set up their software to work properly in California?
