I am evaluating Yotpo Reviews for my online shop but this app comes at $400 per month. We are just getting started with our store so I wonder if anybody would recommend another alternative with similar features, quality, etc. but a lower price point.

We also have some things Yotpo does not have, such as:

2) loading our widgets via HTML stored in metafields, better for speed, conversions and SEO

Do you have examples of your platforms producing real world Rich Snippets? I tested the examples provided by both platforms and both had invalid or missing markup, and I could not find any rich snippets.
p.s. Yotpo is also not very good at doing Rich Snippets. I think they only offer it on the high end packages, and last time I looked their markup was incomplete.
Judge.me only takes care of Review-Aggregate rich snippets for our customers. So it's possible rich snippets of our customer's stores have errors in them for other parts, that is not something we can control.
Can you give me a sample URL where you think our rich snippets are inadequate? (See our landing page and app reviews for shops using our app.)

One of your example sites does cause real world rich snippets. So it does work. Good job.
I noticed you use data-vocabulary.org and keep your markup stand alone. That may cause mixed signal issues with Shopify that now typically uses schema.org to mark up the Product on the same page.
Getting real world rich snippets is beyond just valid markup. Google has quality checks that a page needs to pass before it gets rewarded. So it is best to do as much as possible to pass:
They like to see the reviews and a way to submit a review. You pass well there.
It would more reliably result in rich snippets if the aggregate rating markup was part of the product markup and if the individual reviews were also marked up.
Google has also been against hidden markup via meta tags. However, they are getting better and will accept it if they can see the same information on the page. Their guidelines are now quite vague on the subject:
"Markup should not be used to hide content not visible to users in any form, since it might create a misleading or deceptive search experience."
We agree schema.org would be better, and individual reviews would be better than ReviewAggregate. For our All Reviews pages (for examples, see our app landing page) we already apply schema.org for individual reviews.
For our review widgets we will switch to schema.org + individual review snippets at some point, but given that the current approach already works as you say, this task is not high on our priority list. Hope you understand.

Loox uses Schema.org tags, which is the de facto standard for structured data on the internet and is actively promoted by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others.
We acknowledge that each theme is different and unique and therefore built a system to automatically detect and inject the rich snippets correctly.
Most of the time, we place the rating summary elements inside the schema.org HTML element, which is preferred by Google. It's important since it preserves semantics and context for search engines.
All of our stores are encouraged to test the integration using Google's own Structured Data Testing Tool and contact us if they require any manual assistance, which we provide for free in addition to Inline SEO and Rich snippets which are included in our free plan.

It helps to automate your review process, you'll be able to schedule the emails to send to customers after X days of their fulfillment or purchase date.
Best of all it lets the customers leave a review directly inside the email, Q&A, Social Push, Coupons, Suggested Products, Rich Snippets, Google Indexed Reviews contents, Checkout Comments, and more.
