Can you explain how having duplicate meta descriptions is messing up your page rank? From what I understand Google doesn't factor the description into the ranking factors at all, it's only used to show what could appear in your listings for that page.
My theme uses the `page_description` value which is something you can set on your pages (docs). Maybe your theme is setting this for the homepage and search pages to some default value in your store?
Thanks for you offer of help (sorry about the late reply, I've been on holidays and didn't get a notification).
Webmaster tools is listing these pages as having duplicate meta descriptions under the HTML improvements section. I'm using the Brooklyn theme and my Home Page content is from a page called Home Page in my Shopify pages. I have entered the meta decription and page title in the edit SEO in the Home Page page. It does look like my search page is using a default meta description from the home page but I am unsure how I can change this.
As Eric said, common beleif in the SEO industry is that meta descriptions have no influence on ranking.
If you mean PageRank as in Googles patented algorythm. Then we (the public) have not been able to know that for years.
The Search Consoles duplicate description/title reports are quite dumb reports that can possible indicate an issue. e.g. some website maybe mass duplicating the same page. In this case it is not.
Search pages are generally considered low value pages as they don't really contain original content, and there is a potential for many of them to get into the index. I personaly add a meta robots noindex to them, to keep themout. That may also remove them from your duplicate report.
Thanks for your reply. My homepage is suddenly my worst performing page since this has happened and I am unable to see any other reason for it.
Are you able to give me an example of the code that I need to post in my search page in my search.liquid page to prevent it from being indexed?
