I'm new to this all. My shop opened on Friday. I've just been working on some very basic SEO to drive traffic to my site. As of this morning I'm getting the top seach engine result hit for 'ovine felt' and some variants (which I'm really pleased as it is a good start I think).
My problem is that my product pages come up BEFORE my homepage in the search results. I think it would look more professional if my homepage got the top spot... any advice?
I suspect it is because your home page has little of its own original content, which is not visible on first viewing, and does not include the term "ovine felt". Not even the home pages title uses the words together.
However, your product page starts its title with "ovine felt" and also has it in the heading. So search engines will typically think that page is more relevant to the search made.
I don't think it's a bad thing for a product page to out rank the home page. You want all your pages to work for you and to shop up when they are appropriate for a searchers intent.
I would beef up the introduction on your home page, and try and include the main terms you are targetting.
You own your brand name search results already, which is great. Maybe add pages to target none branded searches. e.g. talk about felt and why it makes good products for gifts. Do some keyword research to see what related things people are searching for, and incorporate that as content (fabric, material, crafts, wool, felting, felted, felt online, felt ideas, christmas felt, hat, gift bags...)
