Hi
Just reaching out to ask other Shopify website owners for help please.

Both Bing & our SEO plug in tell us we're missing H1 tags on our website slclightingonline.com. Please could anybody advise us on how to add these and where we should add them to help achieve best SEO. Should it just be on the Home page or on each of our product pages? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Michele

Hi Michele,

I checked your website and found that your H1 tag on your homepage is your company name. While this is okay, keep in mind that H tags help tell Google what your site is about, and every single page needs one. Product pages automatically tag the product name with an H1, so if you need to use an H tag in the product description, make sure to use an H2 tag.

This is because you never want to have more than one H1 tag per page. Having multiple H1 tags makes Google think you're trying to trick them into thinking your site is more valuable than in information than it actually is, and it appears as spam. In the olden days of SEO, this tricked worked to easily rank a website in the top of Google, but is a "blackhat" method.

Your H tags should have an order to them. Let's say your running a nonprofit charity.

  1. H1 should be your main topic of that page, like "About Us"
  2. H2 comes next, and there can be more than 1 H2 tag. This would be like "Charity to Veterans," then "Charity for Children," etc.
  3. H3 can help further explain a specific aspect of the H2,
  4. H4 further explains an H3, and so on

Think of it exactly like a glossary of your page. Wikipedia uses this format - you can lookup any article such as this one on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and see how it shows you a glossary in the beginning of a long wiki page, and each topic is an H tag.

One of the best ways you can check your H tags is by using MozBar. This is a Google Chrome Extension that allows you to spy on any website, showing you a page analysis including H tags, meta descriptions, and much more.

It's free, and you can find it in the Google Chrome Store here.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply and your advice Michael. We'll have a look at MozBar now. In the meantime how can we change the H tags on a page in Shopify.

You can go to the "Formatting" dropdown tab on the page/product description area. I've attached a screenshot!
