Help! Old collection showing up on Google and 301 Redirection not working!

Does anyone know why one of our old collections is showing up on Google still? In fact, it is one of our highest ranking pages  on our website (it shows up on the FIRST result in Google for a number of key words!). So we are getting heaps of traffic for it but it is now just an empty collection. We still sell the products but they are under a different collection. I have tried using Google Webmaster to stop Google crawling the page as well as 301 redirections on Shopify but none of them work...

The collection url is https://shop.kentauraustralia.com/collections/kep-helmets/kep-custom

Any help anyone could give with regards to this would be amazing!

The page is not 301 redirecting, which indicates you probably have set that up wrong.

How did you use the Google Search Console (formarly Google Webmaster Tools) to "stop Google crawling".

If your 301 redirect is working, you will not need to do anything in the Search Console. In fact you want Google to crawl and find out that it has moved.

Thanks so much for the reply!

We basically just used the 'Remove URL's' function on Search Console. I did this at the same time as creating the URL Redirect (wasn't sure which one was the better option) so maybe they cancelled each other out? In saying that, it is now saying the removal of this URL has expired (not sure why it is only temporary?) and I just tried to recreate the URL redirect again, but to no avail. I have attached screenshots of how I did this.

It could be that using a subdomain is throwing it off.  Is there a particular reason you are doing that?

As in a subdomain from kentauraustralia.com?

This site is on WordPress (we wanted something that we could be a bit more creative on for our Performance Horse side of the business as well as our Blog and About pages), whereas the Shopify site that contains all our products is at shop.kentauraustralia.com

That redirect looks fine. I would chase this up with Shopify support.

Th Search Console URL removal tool is for quick and temporary removal of URLs, and not a long term solution. That's why it expires. In your case a 404 or 301 response is the best permanent solution. If you 301 then avoid doing the URL removal as that will stop the 301 being picked up.

Shopify is not very good at dealing with the sort of URL you provided. I think they are tags in a collection. Any old URL will return a 200 status code indicating it exists, when it does not. e.g.

/collections/kep-helmets/random-stuff

Hence in your case, old tags end up being empty pages that are clogging up your index.

As an alternate solution, I detect empty collections and add a robots noindex tag to the page. This keeps those empty pages out of Google search results. This code in the head section of the theme.liquid file will do the job.

{% if collection and collection.products_count == 0 %}
<meta name="robots" content="noindex" />
{% endif %}

Once in place, you don't need to worry about redirects, but if they make sense I would add them.
