Bloomberg and ClickZ can't be lying when they say more than 55% of product search takes place on Amazon and not on search engines (which now share a 26% figure!). These figures have doubled since 2014 only!

We are competing against a massive giant that keeps growing and that is a brutal fact, without forgetting how tough it is already to compete against big retailers with massive marketing budgets in your niche on search engines!

Are you aware of this and have you found a way around it? Are the days of indie e-commerce as numbered as the days of local shops were when supermarkets started to proliferate?

I suppose loooooong tail and content curation are potential top answers. Anything else in the blue sky?

In my opinion:

  1. Build a brand people love
  2. Micro niche and dominate your field

Also as far as I'm aware, there's many more ecommerce sites sponsoring content like YT and podcasts these days. Ecommerce is growing as a whole, why bother worrying about Amazon?

Yes, that's the fact - not sure if the 55% is accurate though. Amazon gives straight results for someone looking for products [wanting to buy]. Google gives fluff and you have to do loads of clicking forth / clicking back before you come across anything close to what you are looking for. 9/10 it's the Amazon listing. When people do the search on Amazon, the product images are shown in the results page, so they don't need to click the listing to find it's the wrong item. 

I often use Amazon suggested searches for new keywords ideas - if you use them on your website, the chances are you will attract the buyers, ready to make a purchase, credit card in hand. I wrote a guide about it here [scroll down to Amazon]: https://rockpapercopy.info/keyword-research/

You might be joking, Paul, but a lot of Shopify sellers do just that. There are tons of apps in the app store that automate selling between Amazon and Shopify. ByteStand and FBA Shipping are two of them.

People make a little more money by selling on their own store (lower Amazon fees), and they spread out their risk a bit by not putting their entire business in Amazon's hands. Seems like a win-win.

I'm not joking ;)

Amazon is another channel to use.

If you know your audience (and have a great marketing strategy) a stand-alone store is great because you can make more money, but Amazon still has a lot of value if you don't have any marketing skills or budget.

IMO - standing on 2 feet (channels) is better.
