I have done a force crawl yesterday and today and nothing has changed. please help as this is vital to our website.
As I can see your collection is last updated on: 2018-01-25T10:48:11+00:00

Now coming back to the problem you're facing. Sitemaps are always being cached for about an hour. If you make any changes to your shop (e.g. delete a page or product, or change a handle that affects the URL) then the sitemap will get regenerated. But it completely depends on Google how often they fetch the new sitemap information.
As I can see your meta description was updated properly here in your store.
Sometimes it is due to the caching of your browser. Will advise you to google this in incognito mode(Ctrl/CMD+Shift+N) for google chrome next time.
Thank you for that information! I have checked it in incognito mode and it still hasn't changed. I have refreshed my cache and tested on a new computer we have received in the office but it all still shows it. I have added breadcrumbs and everything and still nothing has changed and submitted a new sitemap but it still hasn't changed. Is it just purely a waiting game to hope google will soon crawl and update everything?
No just don't wait. Because right now, every collection of your website is just showing the "menu-items". This will affect organic search in a long run, better to resolve it ASAP. I have found this thread in the forum related to your issue. Plz try following this.
One simple way to do this is to create a new collection with the handle of "all". This will replace the default one.
Using an automatic collection with a condition of "price greater than 0" is a quick way to include everything. Once made, you're free to edit the title and meta description like any other collection.
