Hello! New to the Shopify platform, but I've spotted some potential SEO improvements I'd like to make initially to the Supply template and having trouble finding specific answers posted - so here it goes:
1. Product page canonicalization - I see there are canonical tags to address the way duplicate product page URLs are generated with tags and collections, and that's a start, but I'd like to permanently fix this issue with 301-redirects to the canonical URL (or the top collection URL that specify). It would also be nice to fix links from collections to reflect the canonical as well.
2. Product page breadcrumbs - Is there a way to make breadcrumbs permanent on product pages instead of reflecting the visitor path? This causes a problem with the collection link not displaying on the canonical product page, and therefore not displaying for search bots or visitors entering from SERPs, and not passing SEO value up from products to their collections. Specifically, I want the product page to always link to the top collection that I set for it, no matter where a user is coming from.
Any ideas, advice, or posts to start with would be greatly appreciated!
I think you are stuck with both issues doe to the way products and collections work.
Breadcrumbs only show when a product is in a collection, but that canonicalises back to the product only page, so breadcrumbs don't get into the search index.
We implemented a hack on one website once to get breadcrumbs on the product only page, but we fealt it was not worth the effort.
Canonicals behave very similarily to 301 redirects as far as crawling and indexing goes. So not having the redirect is not generally a major issue.
Thanks Tony! Too bad, otherwise love the platform. I would absolutely like to try out that hack, any information you can provide on that? Even if benefits were determined to be negligible, I still need to test for myself.
Right now starting to see the expected duplicate indexing in Google Search Console, and the associated "HTML Suggestions" for duplicate title tags, etc. Google doesn't always pay attention to canonical tags (and in some cases, 301-redirects) and assumes the "real" page based on internal and external link structure, and this appears to be what's developing. Collection URLs for products are definitely dominant over the product URLs, and are being indexed first despite the sitemap. So far, it looks like Shopify is trying to canonicalize "backward" with Google - much better to go with the flow instead of fighting it.
