So when I put pictures up on my blog (https://sandjayhammocks.com/blogs/news) I always add alt text pertaining to the picture itself. For example, in my article '3 Ways 'Unplugging' From Technology Can Benefit Your Life (https://sandjayhammocks.com/blogs/news/3-ways-unplugging-from-technology-can-benefit-your-life)' I use a picture of a foggy landscape for a paragraph with the heading 'A Fresh Perspective'.. Now I was wondering, should I use alt-text that describes the picture (cloudy vision), or put in the title of the heading (a fresh perspective), or should I be adding alt-text that is pertaining to the title (unplug from technology)?
I hope you can help, as I feel like I'm all scattered when it comes to writing alt-text and would like some insight as to which direction I should go. I appreciate any help.
My name is Kassey and I'm a Guru here at Shopify. You'll want to use the ALT text to describe the image that you're publishing, rather than describing the article itself. I went ahead and grabbed you a couple of links that will give you some tips on how to add your ALT text and will go more in-depth with ALT text. I always like to think of it in relation to helping a visually impared person understand the post better. And consider Google as visually impared.
How would you describe the image in relation to the post?
"A foggy day in a field, depicting a fresh perspective"
If the image adds no real value to the article, then technically it should be given a blank alt attribute (alt=""). This is best practice as the visually impared don't want to read irrelevant or repetitive stuff.
If the image relates to an action, like a link, then the text should explain what the action does.
Kassey: You should tell the article writter that it is not an alt tag. It's an alt attribute. This is a common mistake propagated by articles.
For the file name use keywords that cover the main factors of the image. So I would go with dalore-blue-dress.jpeg
For the alt text, this should be a human readable description of what the photo contains. Don't use dashes. How would you explain the image to someone? Include details like the color, location, situation etc. "The dalore blue dress warn at a dinner dance"
