I had been working with a guy on Magento but he has parted company as he does not use Shopify. Different platforms most certainly do differ in their ability to be SE receptive and it appears Shopify is not one of those. Why should we suddenly drop from 3-6 down to 17 for the same phrase. 6 weeks later there is no sign of recovery. Another long tail phrase where we filled the first three spots we are now 7. I do not have a lot of competitors as the market I'm in is a niche market.
Anytime I hear someone blame Shopify for their drop in organic rankings, I know the migration was poorly handled. Having done many SEO migrations from Magento and other platforms to Shopify, I can tell you Shopify is not your problem. It is common to get a 10% organic traffic fluctuation in the first 2 weeks before restoration for any major design change (which happens from a platform migration.)
The primary reason I see organic drops when migrating is a poor mapping of old URLs to new URLs. Old URLs should be gathered with a full analytics export of pages viewed over a 90 day period, coupled with a Screaming Frog scan of the "old" platform to the new one. This has to be done BEFORE migrating. Another common reason is a poor transfer of content, which includes titles and meta descriptions.

Thanks for your input, Why did Shopify not highlight the importance of doing this when I was in discussions with them? I did specifically ask about SEO of the platform. My developer has not mentioned it and he may have done it - I shall ask.
It is all very well saying it was not done correctly - how is this repaired? It has happened and if not corrected I'll be returning to Magento - very simple to do. I expected a drop, but not to this extent.

It is all very well saying what the issue is - what is to be done to repair the issue?
If there is nothing that may be done then Shopify should have highlighted this and made it crystal clear that this is essential prior to any migration.

I thought I'd better update this to be fair.
Ratings on search platforms have returned to normal - perhaps not as high, but not as frightening as it was immediately after switching to Shopify.
There has been financial damage and I do feel Shopify should be more pro-active in advising on procedures for a seemless switch from another commercial platform.
