Hi, I recently set up a shop, www.petridisfineartshop.com
This is an eCommerce store that I helped build in hopes to help a nice humble local artist I talked to. I wanted him to focus more time on painting rather than selling paintings.
I am thinking about the target audience for the paintings. The shop mostly sells abstract, nature, horses type of paintings. They are usually 16" x 20". His art sells between $200 - $500.
I am wondering where should I begin to find the target audience?? I rounded down the demographics:
income level: 80k+
Interest: cityscapes, seascapes, horses, nature, flower, wildlife
I do not know much about professions, here are a few that I would suspect that I could try:
- real estate business offices (they put paintings on the wall)
- luxury buildings (any building that wants a high class feel with paintings)
- higher income stay at home moms (they like to decorate their house I assume)
- Home decorators/Interior designers (I'm not familiar with this one)
My question is: Is there a better angle for me to tackle? and also, where would I go and begin to market my products if I were to target the housewives first?
Thanks a lot for reading! I appreciate your help
This problem is very common when you are just starting venturing into a business. The best thing to do here is to really know your target audience, for whom really your business or product is. In this way, you will be able to bring out the best in your business.

Narrowing down your target demographic can be tricky, especially when it comes to selling art. Don’t worry too much though, you are on the right track by asking the appropriate questions.
Don’t make the mistake of creating a demographic that is too narrow. When it comes to selling things like art, the potential customers who are willing to buy your pieces may surprise you! With that being said, you don’t want to make your audience too general either - doing so will result in site traffic but, unfortunately, no sales. How are you creating your target audience? From your post, it sounds like you are doing so manually or through guess work. The best way to go about marketing your products is through Facebook Ads. FB ads provide you with important data analytics that can help you advertise to the correct demographic. Use this to your advantage! However, even with the help of Facebook’s sophisticated data analytics, figuring out your target market can still be a little confusing. I’d like to recommend one of Shopify’s awesome machine learning apps called Pollen (https://apps.shopify.com/poln) that I believe will really help your business. Pollen has the unique ability to help you narrow down your demographic and market to them effectively. Once you start generating some sales, they can also help you create lookalike audiences for your shop. Pollen enables you to acquire customers on Facebook and across the web simply and cost effectively. Through powerful automation, Pollen offers an easy-to-use marketing platform that’s sole expertise is in driving sales. It takes as little as 2 minutes to set up a campaign. Pollen takes care of the rest. It’s as simple as that!
Hopefully this helps! Best of luck to you and your shop!
