I am transfering my old website from Wordpress to Shopifyand I am trying to do it well for the SEO : am I using "URL redirects" correctly for the following exemple ?

Actual site (Wordpress) : https://www.glorias.com.br/documen…/autografo-anthony-quinn/

New site (Shopify, not yet online) : https://colecao-glorias.myshopify.com/products/autografo-de-anthony-quinn-1960

On the "URL redirects" module :
Old path : /documento-raro/autografo-anthony-quinn
redirect to : /products/autografo-de-anthony-quinn-1960

Thank you !

Ps : I am keeping the same domain www.glorias.com.br

Hi, Mathias!

Anders from the Social Care Team here.

As SEO is quite crucial to any online store, it's always good to double-check these redirects.

Yes, the example you show is correct. The Old URL path would be the one generated by Wordpress and the new path would be the one generated by Shopify (https://screenshot.click/Image_U5BnzDHka4.jpg).

However, before doing any routing, make sure to first migrate your domain to Shopify first. The URL re-direction will not route properly unless the old URL leads to a 404. We have more information on this HERE

Let me know if you need any further clarification on that.

Take care,

Thank you Anders, your answer is very clear and helpfull. Beside the migration of my domain (1st), the "URL redirects" work (2nd), should I do something else ? I heard about 301, 404, sitemaps, webmastertools... it is chinese to me :)

Thanks again, have a great day

Mathias

Hi Mathias,

In addition, make sure you have a complete list of all existing URLs before you start!

You may already have this in your Wordpress generated sitemap. If not, you can use Screaming Frog SEO spider to crawl the existing Wordpress site (it’s an industry standard SEO tool, free for up to 500 URLs). Take all these URLs into a spreadsheet and make a note of the new URL corresponding to each old one.

If you don’t do that, I’m not sure how you would be sure to set up all your redirects properly, unless the site is very simple.

You can check how Google is indexing your site by using Google search console. Some basic info here: https://help.shopify.com/manual/promoting-marketing/seo/find-site-map

Hope this helps,

Andrew

If you already have a site going, you can easily integrate products from Shopify and take advantage of their eCommerce architecture. Plus, by using your own site, you are able to use your own domain for the shop instead of a subdomain on the Shopify platform. WordPress will be the main programm which help you to make  very cool opportunity for business owners who want to start an online shop quickly without diving too deeply into the technical aspects .
