Hi there!

Wondering how can I customize the title tag and Meta Description for a Tag Page..

Now, that tag page and the collection page share the title tag.
Collection page: https://shopmtn.eu/collections/doughty-engineering
Tag Page: https://shopmtn.eu/collections/doughty-engineering/clamp

But, I want the tag page has a unique title: Doughty Clamps - Best Entertainment Equipment - MTN Shop
Any simple way for doing that! Thanks a million=)

This is an accepted solution.

Hi, Iky.

My name is Tira and I am a Shopify Guru here to help!

Editing the title and meta description of a specific tag of a collection (a filtered collection) cannot be done. This is because the tag is part of that collection, so changing the title of the collection would also change the title of the tag’s URL.

The filtered collection (with the tag) creates a canonical URL which helps to prevent duplicate pages from appearing on search engines. It is the root collection, so when the filtered page is scanned by Google, it gets referenced back to the main page of the collection. Check out our SEO for theme developers here for additional information on title and meta descriptions, and our SEO Overview here for more information about canonical URLs.

I am also curious to what the community will provide as workarounds!

Thanks Tira!

I understood very well! It’s so strange before that I saw both collection page and filtered collection page pop up on SERP... That’s why I got confused!

I just did it again! Only the collection page pops up! All set:)

Thanks again!

Hi @Tira – it's possible I'm misunderstanding you, but are you sure this is correct?

The filtered collection (with the tag) creates a canonical URL which helps to prevent duplicate pages from appearing on search engines. It is the root collection, so when the filtered page is scanned by Google, it gets referenced back to the main page of the collection.

The output of {{ canonical_url }} on a collection page filtered by a tag is a URL that includes the tag. Here's an example from a client site (Brooklyn theme):

So unfortunately it isn't pointing to their root collection "meals-snacks-drinks", and is thus currently leading to duplicate title/meta descriptions for this client in SERPs.

Let me know if I'm missing something here, otherwise we'll start building out a solution for them...

Cheers, Andrew.

Hello all,

It is possible to create unique meta titles and unique meta descriptions on filter pages. We have developed the ONLY themes in the world with built-in, optimized and non conflicting product and collection page filters. Each filter page URL has optimized and unique:

- URL's

- Meta title tags

- Meta description

- H1 - [different from page title]

- Indexable content

- Alt = tags

No other themes in the world can do this apart from ours. Only recently launched. You can see the technology in action here on a major UK shoe retailer and an independent retailer here. The technology can be applied to up to 8 filters in the sidebar - this client only has them on SIZE and COLOR:

https://quarterandlast.com/collections/mens-brogue-shoes/uk-6

We also launched these with another fashion retailer just last week who is using 4 optimized filters and is already ranking number 1 for numerous long tail searches:

https://www.fabfrocks.co.uk/collections/day-dresses/10

Here is a full working demo: https://integritycommerce-fashion.myshopify.com

Our unique canonical programming technology completely eliminates ALL duplications for shop by brand and shop by product type.

We're just in the process of re-branding this Trademarked technology from Integrity Commerce® to AAP® Theme.  You can learn more about our technology here on a few of our sites which were are currently merging into one!  Please feel free to reach out with any questions - kma@integritysearch.co.uk - CEO.

@malalta Please help in updating the meta description for the following links:

https://thefunkydelicstore.com/collections/men-shoes/boots

https://thefunkydelicstore.com/collections/men-shoes/high-top-shoes

Please note that these links are not the filter links, instead these are static pages created to work as filters on the collection pages. The products are listed on these links based product tags present. A product containing tags for both the collections men shoes and boots/high top shoes would show up on these links

Looking forward to solution on this.

Thanks

The URLs you listed are collection pages filtered by tags:

  • /collections/men-shoes/boots --> all products with the "boots" tag in the "men-shoes" collection
  • /collections/men-shoes/high-top-shoes --> all products with the "high-top-shoes" tag in the "men-shoes" collection

In Shopify the meta description is set at the collection level ("men-shoes" in your case). It's not possible natively to have different meta descriptions within the same collection based on tags.

That said, if you're determined to change the meta description based on tags, the simplest way would be to add some logic to your theme.liquid template. Something like this should get you started:

<!-- Within the <head> of theme.liquid -->

{% comment %}
  - Capture tag specific description into "my_meta_description" variable.
  - Fall back to use "page_description"
{% endcomment %}

{% if current_tags contains "boots" %}
  {% capture my_meta_description %}BOOTS TAG META DESCRIPTION{% endcapture %}
{% elsif current_tags contains "high-top-shoes" %}
  {% capture my_meta_description %}HIGH TOP SHOES TAG META DESCRIPTION{% endcapture %}
{% elsif page_description %}
  {% capture my_meta_description %}{{ page_description }}{% endcapture %}
{% endif %}

{% comment %}Output result of the above into page <meta> tag{% endcomment %}
{% if my_meta_description %}
  <meta name="description" content="{{ my_meta_description | escape }}">
{% endif %}
