We are a New York based sportswear brand (online only). Launched our site in December 2019 and have done fairly well with no marketing; however, we plan to fully integrate facebook shop, instagram, etc. and begin advertising in the coming weeks. 

 

Before doing so, I would love to hear some feedback from the shopify community on anything from web layout, image quality/descriptions, search engine listings to checkout process etc. Basically any feedback will do :)

Hey Corin Demarco,

The main menu should be shifted to the center to avoid the unwanted space on the top right of the header. Home button should be added to the beginning of the main menu for ease of navigation to the homepage. Other essential pointers for store optimization are as follows:

  1. "Faq" should be replaced with "Login" on the top right of the header as Faq is already a part of the footer.
  2. "Sale" section should be a part of the main menu for keeping all discounted items together.
  3. Favicon is missing, which is quite crucial for site identification.
  4. The logo needs some modification, needs to be reworked on. Try different font styles and a tint of graphics for a more professional logo.
  5. I would love to see an Account login/sign-in system, as it is a must for e-commerce.
  6. Reviews should be added below each product for improving customer choice.
  7. Testimonials are a must for instant brand promotion.
  8. You can also install one of the most popular app Growwave which is all in one marketing platform that helps store owners increase conversions with ease.
  9. Finally, I would also recommend replacing the default search with an advanced search like Sparq which allows synonyms, advanced custom tag filters, spelling correction, and other such features. Visitors with search are high intent users and their conversion rate is higher than normal users.

I have some comments on your pages based on my experience and what I learned from Baymard's research. You can search their research on top-grossing ecommerce sites. There're many things we can learn, especially if you are building an online store.

 

Homepage:

It's good that you have an intention to feature the product collections on your homepage. This makes sure people have an overview of the product ranges available in your store. However, it seems you are not actually featuring the collections available. But the "Shop Collection" section is actually showing products.

This section needs to feature the collections available in your store. If you look at the SHOP menu, you'll see that there're 3 collections. You can feature these collections.

Collection page

Collection pages are where people scan through many items to find the product they want. People evaluate the items based on the information displayed and thumbnail images. You should make these two piece of information as clear as possible. Along with price, variants, shipping and payment are essential information that you should include in each list item.

Product page

There are two UX errors I think you should improve to improve the shopping experience on your product pages

1. Product images: You are having many product images for this product, which is good. However, people tend to seek more information from the product images, especially visually-driven products like apparel. At least, there are 4 types of product images that you should include for each product: In-scale images:

  • In-scale images: Images with its surroundings so that people can estimate its actually sizes and dimensions.
  • Feature-highlight images: Images highlighting the unique features of the product. In this example, it's an image that zooms into the fabric material of the product.
  • Images displaying products from many angles: This allow people to evaluate the products better.

2. Variant presentation:

You are using drop-down list for variants, which means you are spontaneously require people to take more action to view all the variants available and select one. I suggest you use badges and list out all the variant available. Not only does this give people an overview of how many variants the product offer, but it also makes it easier for them to select a variant.

Also, for color variants, you can consider using color swatch instead of plain text. This would reduces the risk that some users cannot understand what the text says (language, display errors), which leads to difficulty in selecting variants.

Your store looks cool !! I’ve gone through your store and found that there are quite a few things missing on your store which if added can really make a lot of difference to the user experience, conversion rate and your overall sales. Here is a page-by-page/sectional review of your site:

 

Header & Footer :

Customize your header and footer with specific functionalities. Your header must be sticky header header with proper navigation.Your header should offer a Smart search bar where people can type in the products they’re looking for. Your store must have login Icon for ease customer login.  Example of Good Header 

Also, create a slide out cart, a cart icon with item calculator and let your social links open in a new tab so your customers don’t have to leave your store to check your social media pages. In footer section payment icon must be there for the store security purpose and your newsletter must be highlighted so people who follow can have the your brand can subscribe to receive more updates.

 

Home Page :

A lot can be done to your homepage to make it more informative & attractive. Add hero banner with prompt CTA buttons that syncs well with your store theme & branding. This banner should include info like free shipping, offers/deals like 50% off, etc. Below the hero banner, create categories for all your products in a slider that engages customers. Your Unique value proposition should be highlighted on your homepage. Add testimonial carousels, announcement bars, product slideshows, featured collections, display instagram feed and make your homepage SEO friendly to increase your site traffic and conversions.  Example of Nice Home page

Collection Page :

Your customer views this page to have an in-depth view of the products and services you offer. Make sure this page has a creative banner to enhance the visual appeal of your store, product reviews of all the products in your store, infinite scrolling to increase page views,announcement bars for highlighting promotions, events, deals and product etc.  Example of Good Collection Page 

 

Product Page :

Add interactive and user-friendly features like custom swatches, product zoom in, product reviews, unique product titles/descriptions, cart drawer and a sticky cart with a sticky add to cart and buy now button. Example of Ideal Product Page

Cart Page :

Maybe offering gift wrapping on your cart page, allowing your customers to choose their preferred delivery date and time, include security trust badges and add notes like special delivery and packaging instructions can make them trust and love your brand way more. This page is the final step before your customers check out from your store so it should be as impressive as any other page on your store.  Example of Good Functional Cart Page

 

Integrations on your store :

How do you plan to monitor your site performance and track conversions? 

Simply set up and integrate Google Analytics, Facebook Conversion tracking and Google Search Console with your store and get to know who is visiting your store, their demographics, which of your Facebook page viewer converts into your buyer and your store’s ranking, impressions & clicks  on Google. 

 

Besides these tracking methods, make sure the following is included on your store:

  1. Include live chat option that is visible on every page of your store to keep your customers happy and retain them.
  2. Live chat option must be there for easy communication with the buyers
  3. There needs to be a strong color coordination among all the colors used on your store. Try to use the same or similar colors used in your logo throughout your store and in the social media business page banner or cover picture you create.
  4. Create a sense of urgency with countdown timer, ‘only 1 left’ features  and promotional banners highlighting ‘sale expiry’.
  5. Ensure your store speed is optimized. You can do this by checking your google page speed score. Minify codes that are redundant or apps that are slowing down the site speed.  Make your site mobile-friendly. Sample
  6. Multi Currency changer must be there so that customer can buy globally.
  7. Optimize your user experience with easy navigation, proper spacing, alignment, font and color coordination.

After displaying collection on the homepage. You should give Product Recommendations by personalizing the consumer shopping experience through gathered data, you can give better suggestions to your customers, which will then increase the likelihood that your customers will purchase a suggested product.

 

3. You should maximize engagement on your store which will help you to reach and capture maximum customers easily. Also, if your store is engaging then it will help you to reduce Customer Churn Rate i.e percentage of customers who stop purchasing from your brand and will also increase your customer retention. These are some ways you can increase the engagement on your store:-

 

  • You can start giving Loyalty Points and Rewards to WOW your customers. This will increase repeat purchase and customer lifetime value by giving points and rewards that give customers more reasons to return to your store.
  • Add a web push notification - It turns visitors into subscribers and subscribers into customers. It's a powerful and effective marketing tool adopted by online businesses to reach out to and interact with their audience, keep them updated about any important information, announcing sales and offers, and eventually driving more eCommerce conversions.

there have been a lot of good points already and I just want to add on a couple things:

 

  • Love the images! However, they are a bit noisy sometimes. For shops I always recommend to make them smoother in order to blend in with the background. If you don't want to retake all pictures that you're not satisfied with, I highly recommend using a denoiser. I have used Topaz DeNoise in the past and can recommend it.
  • I highly suggest balancing the background white levels of your products to make them look like they float in your shop instead of just regular pictures.
  • Your 20% discount for registering for your newsletter is also a bit hidden. I suggest to make it more prominent through a popup or something similar.
  • I also noticed that there are not a lot of reviews. You can use tools like Loox to incentivise your customers to create picture reviews for you. They usually only offer a 14 day trial, but we negotiated a 30 day trial and will also remind you to cancel it if it doesn't achieve a good return on your potential investment after this time.

Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate the time and consideration, I am actively updating my page accordingly.  Please forgive me also, I am learning as I go with website development. A couple follow-up questions: 

 

re; 2. Variant presentation, specifically using badges and list out all the variant available. Can you elaborate? Are badges available in shopify default settings or does this require a app or development?  Can you also provide a example (from other website, etc.?).

 I notice that you have given a very generic name to your collection. I suggest you add a product type-specific name to your collection example: Howard crew neck sweatshirts. Also, add the product type in the product title and product URL. example: your product URL should look like https://www.corindemarco.com/collections/heritage-crewneck/products/xxx-hampton-institute-heritage-c...

and Product tile should be 1930 HAMPTON INSTITUTE HERITAGE CREWNECK SWEATSHIRT.

 

I did a flare check on your site you have 16 results indexed by Google. you have 18+ pages. You can submit your sitemap regularly to major engines, or consider using a convenient tool like flare that offers many other major benefits.
