Stuck and thinking of closing my store to learn and try other things

21 0 4
I wish I have tested my idea before investing the time and money on my webpage. I am thinking of closing my Shopify Store (print on demand) store I have no sales since I opened in January 2020. I feel stuck and have lost motivation. This is my first e-commerce store.I wanted to create a Brand of 4 Patas, I love the logo, I love dogs, and the concept, but I don't love losing money.
My main niche are millennials dog lovers in Puerto Rico, and in the USA. Maybe my niche is too niche. some things are not working, but I don´t know what those things are, maybe the designs are not attractive, or I have too much product variety (since the original concept was only selling matching dog tshirts and tshirt for dog owners with the same phrases in spanish or designs). I had to change the concept from dog tshirts to dog bandanas because I did not find any USA company offering POD shirts for dogs, and the one that I found it´s so expensive that I will have to sell them for $23 each to make a small profit. On Puerto Rico seldom people will buy a tshirt for a dog for that price.
I am thinking of a few things, before I close my store:
1) testing some products in Redbubble and Etsy, the thing I am stuck is in what POD or products I should try.
 2) Selling some Oberlo dog products in high demand, like dog beds, but I am not sure, since that was not the original brand concept.
3) Another strategy I was thinking is putting all t-shirts on sale. I think the prices are a higher than the market average, with print on demand, it is a challenge to even make 30% profit.
I also would like to have an idea of how much facebook-instagram ad money is "adequate" for beginners that use their own money to advertise. I have run some facebook and instagram ads to my target market, but no sales yet. People seem to like the pictures on my instagram page (4patas_pr) and follow my page, but they don´t buy anything. I am bilingual so I can make an english or spanish webpage.
I wanted to generate some money on the side - besides my 8 to 4:30 Job -  so I can travel and save money, but I think I have to do something else to make money. It´s a flood of info on e-commerce on the web and you tube, and there are great resources, and others not so great, and not so honest. But at the same time I know someone is making money - it´s just not me right now - and I will like to. I never imagined this learning curve was going to be so hard. I don´t mind making mistakes and learning from them. I just don´t like wasting my money.

First of all, you got a really nice website and i love it. Why you have no sales since openning of this store in Jan 2020, there would be a lot of things to talk about. The conpept changing is a situational react to deal with a limited resources, you've done pretty well. Your niche is not too niche, I think the point is have you understand clearly about POD and your customers?  The link below would help you.

Beside of the three last things you will do, i think you have to add some translator app, money converter, double check your strategy and put a little more patience to yourself. Goodluck on 4 Patas!

I have gone through your site. Though it looks good, there are quite a few things missing on your store which if added can really make a lot of difference to the user experience, conversion rate and your overall sales.

Logo & Favicon :

Logo & Favicon -- Your logo should highlight your brand name. Add a favourite icon so users can locate your webpage easily.

  1. Header -- Have a sticky header and a clear smart search bar to help users locate the products they're looking for. Also a slide out cart, a cart icon with item calculator must have features. Login icon must be there for buyer account creation before purchasing.
  2. Footer -- Optimize your footer with more professional and functional look and also highlight your newsletter sign up so people who follow your brand will receive more updates about promotions and sales. There are legal policy pages which are missing in the footer that must be included for authenticity and security purpose

A lot can be done to your homepage to make it more informative & attractive.

  1. Banners & Branding -- Add hero banner with prompt CTA buttons that syncs well with your store theme & branding. This banner should include info like free shipping, offers/deals like 50% off, etc
  2. Color, Font & Branding -- Over All Text, Font , Paragraph , Alignment , Spacing , Padding etc should be more elegant so that your store looks well-organized, neat and visually appealing. Maintain the same or similar colors and fonts throughout your store to keep your  branding intact
  3. Featured Collection -- Add all the top featured collection on the homepage so users know the type of products you're selling on your store.
  4. Featured / Bestseller products -- Engage your customers by letting them know the bestseller products on your store
  5. Testimonials -- They add to the trust factor as when customers see what other buyers have to say about your products, it makes them more sure about your brand.
  6. Highlight your USP -- What's unique about your brand that none of the other Shopify merchants have? This needs to be highlighted in your store presentation, features & more.
  7. Trust Badge on Home Page -- This is important as this helps to build trust and assures your customers that your brand is authentic

Your customer views this page to have an in-depth view of the products and services you offer.

  1. Banner adding on Collection page -- Make your collection page stand out with interesting & creative collection banners
  2. Product filter for easy navigation -- Categorize & filter products by their size, color or type so users find product to product navigation easy.
  3. Product Label -- Product labels like % off, ‘New Arrival’, ‘Sold Out’ must be there must be there for the ease of the buyer
  4. Product Showcasing -- Clear product title and description , high quality images , reviews , related products , color swatch function, grey effect for sold out products , product labels . All these features make your store much more convenient, authentic, easy to use and user friendly.

Hello @lolaflores,

I understand that it's not easy to get sales initially so I would suggest you to maximize engagement on your store. It will help you to capture visitors and convert them into customers and result in more sales.

General feedback about the store:-

- The featured collection looks cluttered on the homepage. Make it look organized and professional.

- Add call to action button in the first fold of the image. It can be 'shop now', 'click here'.

- Display testimonials on the homepage.

Tools you need to add to maximize engagement on your store and get conversions:-

1. Add web push notifications, it will help you to retarget your customers even when they are not on your store without getting their email address.

2. Add a chatbot to make sure you never lose any of your customers. Every visitor can be your customer.

3. Start giving loyalty points on activities like on signing up, allowing for push notifications, visiting a store, leaving a review. This will help you to entice your visitors and will also increase the number of push subscribers, reviews, newsletter subscribers. A loyalty program helps in increasing sales and increase the retention rate.

4. You can add a countdown timer to create urgency for your promotions or offers with the countdown timer bar and motivate your customers to buy more from the store.  It helps in increasing sales.

To implement these engagement features on your store and increase conversions you can install It is 'All in One' Shopify app that has all the essential features in a single app and is a fully integrated app.  Plus you don't need to install multiple apps. You can check it out. I am sure you will find it useful.

I am ok. Thanks. I am reading what you sent, and reading every reply I get. Now I have to get organized and choose a few things that I can start working on, since I am only one, and with a lot of things that I could do...

Thanks so much for taking the time to review my page in such a detailed way. I really appreciate it. That's a lot of info to take in. I need to focus  in choosing 1 or 2 of the most important things to do, and then keep improving one day at a time.  Since I am doing it alone, and have my full time job and my life running at the same time. I wish I could have more time to learn and experiment. I am no techie, and for now don't have the resources to hire a web designer, so I have to do the improvements I can, myself.  Again Thanks so much for your help and great advice!!!

Glad to hear that you will move on! One thing, you don't need to hire a web developer, this app: PageFly Advance Page Builder is wonderful for people like us, no need any web design or coding skill. Only drag & drop, they have free trial for 14 days, i think you should give it a try
