We recently launched our new store (transitioning from Magento) on Shopify. We are using a free theme but have done a number of code edits for specific functionality and SEO tweaks. I would love feedback.

Here's the site: https://www.alaskaharvest.com/

Thank you!

Hey Alaskaharvest,

You guys have been around for a while...27 years. Maybe you should be promoting this right upfront and central...really is testiment to trust and credibility?

How long did you have a ecommerce store on Magento and why the switch?

Really minor point...your focus is seafood...and the main messaging is seafood...Angus tenderloins seem a little out of theme...maybe these can be inserted as suggested product rather than seperate menu item 'Goes great with' on the actual seafood product pages?

I know it's fresh food...but maybe include a returns policy...even if it's to state..no returns ;-)

How quick is delivery? Same day? Next day? Again think this needs to be upfront and in everyones face.....quality is great...but people want to know that they can get it for that same day BBQ or something...

I think your site does what you want...how do you current drive traffic to it?

Lastly, as a product and Q&A app owner, I personally find the little review pop distracting. A floating static sidebar which give the customer the option of whether they want to read more might be more fitting.

Here to help if you have any other questions.

Best,

Scott | HelpfulCrowd

Loved your site.. 28 years in business.. Amazing..  Didnt' pay lots of attention but first question visitors may have is about freshness on arrival and who/which occassions people have ordered these kind of special items for.. May be, high light those.

Hi,

Thank you for the feedback! I will try to address everything but bear with me if I miss something.

Great points about highlighting the length in business. I'll have to think about how to do that effecively.

We do have all our policies online here: https://www.alaskaharvest.com/pages/customer-service

The magento store has been around for a long time, around 10 years. The motivation to switch is to have something that is easier to manage and won't let you screw things up accidentally to the extent you can with Magento. With Shopify I think you really have to go try to mess things up. This is a family business and there isn't a person who can stay on top of all the site related tech that you really need with Magento.

Most of the current traffic is direct marketing. SEO has really suffered due to some issues with how Magento has been handled internally. We're working on that part now and have done a number of tweaks to the theme in order to try and maximize it.

I don't disagree about the review popover. We're testing it out to see what effect it has on conversion and bounce rate. It seems to be helping!

I'm not sure about the video idea. I personally don't really like it and when I test sites that have them the load time is really high. I'm trying to keep load times to a minimum to help with user experience and SEO.

Overall it sounds like we're not doing anything very seriously wrong?

Thanks for the feedback! It's much appreciated.

Hey there, I love your store, I only wish mine looked as good and had reviews already.

I spent about five mins looking through so didn't go into huge detail but, immediately I saw one area for development in the photography. I think it would be worth investing in a re-toucher to make the images look a little fresher, there's totally nothing wrong with the composition or set up (in my opinion) but they do have a slight faded 80s look about them - again IMO.

Oh, one other - upload a favicon!

Otherwise LOVE it!

Hey Alaskaharvest,

Thanks for sharing the feedback on Magento....The Shopify family is glad to have you on board.

Great to see that you've considered the feedback and can share what you've found what works and what doesn't. In truth, we're all beginners...and we only stop learning when we think we know it all ;-)

I still think highlighting the speed of delivery is important...especially given it's fresh seafood. "Most orders delivered straight from the boat to your door next day"

On the marketing front some other ideas to consider (and maybe you've already considered) is a refer a friend campaign. On the conversion front, maybe a 'free shipping for all orders over $x' could help...just need to make sure that you're not uncessarilary giving away something someone would pay for...or if you know your average basket size...or if there's a concentrated distribution of orders in a specific price point, lifting that free shipping bar is a way to nudge your customers to increasing their basket size just a little more....

Best,

James, you're right about the images. I agree they do need some sprucing up. And thanks for the favicon suggestion.

Helpful Crowd, the shipping cost is a big challenge. Perishables like seafood need to be shipped with special packaging and refrigeration that lasts the duration of transit. Unfortunately the shipping costs including packaging are very expensive and free shipping isn't a viable option for us.
