Accepting deposit to start manufacturing, splitting payments

Hello,

I'm in a bespoke bike business. The lead time is 2-3 month. To start working with client on the bike design I would like to accept $500 non-refundable deposit. This is  a standard for this industry as people are usually uncomfortable to pay 100% upfront. I'm using Product Options by Bold to run product configurator and I would like a client to see the total price of the bike before paying deposit. After we finalize design I would like to accept 50% - $500 downpayment to start manufacturing and when the bike is ready, the remaining 50%. I've chosen shopify as a platform because it is the most popular but now I realize that it might not be flexible enough for my business. Is it possible to implement deposits and splitting payments on a Shopify platform?

There is an old post with similar issue that wasn't answered: https://ecommerce.shopify.com/c/payments-shipping-fulfilment/t/accepting-15-deposit-196177

Thanks,

Roman

We are a furniture company. and this is a similar problem for us. We take a 50% deposit on custom furniture. Then the balance when we deliver.

Once an order is partially paid, is there a way to email the balance due to the customer?  You can do this with a manually entered order. But not for a partial payment.

We have the retail package, so we can always have them come to the store, or call with a credit card number. But this sucks.  It would be so much cleaner to email out an updated invoice.

Please help Shopify!!!!!!

Hello. I am also a custom furniture manufacturer using the Bold Product Options app. I was reading through your comments and realized there are no solutions listed yet (3 years later). Have any of you figured out a way to get 50/50?

There are a few work arounds that can be applied.

1) Use an auto discount apply feature for items that are allowed to be custom made. State in both title and description that a down payment is request and will appear at check out.

Note that this will apply the discount code to the cart at check out for 50% of the item. When the product is completed you will have to manually invoice the customer for the difference.

Or use edit order to edit the order and remove the discount and send a payment request for the remaining balance.

Edit Order App: https://apps.shopify.com/edit-order

Alternative: https://apps.shopify.com/order-editor-2 (Seems to have the same features however, I personally haven't used it to know if you can remove the applied discount code)

2)Use Split -Partial Payments app to have the customer split the payment. Sadly this is more control on the customer than the seller.

3) Use a pre-order app that allows partial payments. Change the word "pre-order" to what ever is need and add the hover message.

1. Doesn't work for our type of work.

2.  we tried but like you said, the customer can control how much they put down.

3. That is what we currently have installed but it doesn't work in conjunction with BOLD Product Options app.. Which is why we are searching for another solution.

Thank you though!
