The process of connecting my paypal account to shopify appears to work right up till the last minute where I get this error message with no other details or information. I have tried a few times at different times of the day. A bit of a show stopper really. Hopefully shopify can help as I only just switched to them and don't want to have to switch again.

I've taken a look at error messages for PayPal that are caused on Shopify's end, and unfortunately, this is not one of them. When you see this error, it has occurred on PayPal's side, so you would need to contact them to help you resolve it.
Before doing that, I can provide some general troubleshooting advice on common issues connecting to PayPal.

Assuming you've already tried the above workarounds, your next best option is to contact PayPal directly. A common misconception is that because PayPal is built-in to Shopify, that means we are able to troubleshoot. Whilst that is very true in a lot of cases, when the error occurs or appears on PayPal's end, it's likely to be an issue on their end.
Outside of what I've already suggested above, try using another device or browser to see if it works. Most browsers are supported, but some can sometimes cause little issues (Safari and Edge come to mind). I did a test on my PayPal account to see if I could replicate this error, and I was able to connect it via Google Chrome on a MacBook Air, and didn't run into any issues.
