We have an issue with our shipping rates being calculated after a free item discount is applied.
We offer free shipping on orders more than $50, however when a customer uses the free item discount code and their order total goes below $50, they somehow still qualify for free shipping because the item value is still used to calculate shipping.
The problem seems to stem from the fact that Shopify doesn't send the updated total to 3rd party shipping apps after a discount is used.
To resolve this, Shopify needs to send the actual total that the customer is paying to 3rd party shipping apps so that rates can be calculated correctly.
We completely agree! It would make life better if Shopify passed this information as part of the rate request.
That being said, if you're open to using a third-party app, we do our best with Intuitive Shipping to pull discount information at the time of the rate request using a variety of reverse lookup techniques that has about a 95% success rate!

@AdanRamirez @Joel-Reeds We currently are not looking to switch to a different 3rd party shipping app, as we have already found one that functions the way we need it to. The problem is the app, and every other 3rd party app that I am aware of, does not receive the full cart details from Shopify. That is why this post is a feature request for Shopify to start sending more detailed information to 3rd party shipping apps so that rates can be correctly calculated.
