HS code necessary?

Hi all, 

I'm new to shopify and currently building my site. Here is my situation : 

I have the products with me. I'm based in Quebec, Canada but will be launching in USA. Can't seem to find the right answer regarding the HS codes. I've read that for products under $800 USD, no custom duties are charges?

Therefore, my question is : If my products are all under $800, is it necessary for me to fill in the HS codes?

Thanks for reaching out about this. If you are shipping your products internationally, you would need to enter the HS codes despite the price. These codes provide customs with information so that correct tariffs can be applied to the order. You can find the HS code for your product by searching using a keyword in the HS code field of the product details page. Learn more about HS codes from the World Customs Organization.

Hi,

I shipped out two orders several weeks ago to international destinations but I didn't know at the time that HS codes were required. My customers say that they still have not received their packages. Is it possible that this delay is due to the missing HS codes? What can I do?

While I don't think that would have been the delay on shipping your order, I wouldn't be able to say for sure since they are indeed used for classification in Customs. This code provides Customs with information so that correct tariffs can be applied to the order. Since you posted this a while back, please feel free to share you experience in case other merchants happen to stumble across our thread here.
