If an order is not fulfilled 100% is there a way to partially fulfill and ship?

In our business we sometimes do not have a product in stock, but with a large order we want to get that out to the customer as quickly as possible, choosing to do a partial fulfillment of what we are currently sending, with the remainder to be shipped when it comes in stock. Here is where we are running into problems with the ship option, if you patially fulfill we have not found a way to go in and ship, if we choose fulfill and ship it fulfills the order in full.  Is there a solution to this we are missing?  While we don't have a ton of partial fulfillments it is something that comes up enough to warrent finding a solution.  Any help is appreciated.

Nick here!

It is possible to do this yes :) Here's some steps on how to do it:

Go to your orders section, and find the order in question. Click the order number to open it.

Hit fulfill on the order. This will present a screen with the line items, and a quantity beside each one.

For out of stock products, change the quantity to zero. This doesn't effect the ordered quantity, just what's being fulfilled this time :) 

When you changed the numbers there, you'll see below boxes for tracking number, URL, and a dropdown to choose the carrier. You can fill these out for the products you are going to fulfill this time. 

Once the products come back into stock, you can repeat the above. You'll be presented with new options to add tracking details each time you hit fulfill, so you can partially fulfill, add tracking, and ship every item on the order separately. I've made a video below to show this process:

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your response. Ok, so we can change the numbers below as we would if we were to strictly use the "fulfill" option vs the "buy shipping label" option.  Now can anyone tell me if a product is sent back to be exchanged is there is a way to purchase a shipping label to send the newly exchanged product out to them?  We are trying hard to streamline our shipping, and while I find the "buy shipping label" option a bit cumbersome as it requires us to do things out of order, it is an option we would like to explore further.  Thank you for your help!
