Is it possible to add manual payment method to a specific product in your store?

I have a store that offers a variety of furnishings that I offer free shipping on.  A few of the items in my store are shipped by special freight carriers only. For these products, I am not able to cover the costs of shipping alone, so I will need to determine the shipping costs and send an invoice to the customer. I've noted in the product page when an item is ineligible for free shipping, and also have a manual payment called pre-shipment invoice, in which a customer can choose. If they choose that, then I would configure the total price of their order and email their invoice back to them for them to complete their order. In a perfect world, this would be smooth, however, after testing the theory, it is not working as I would hope. On the checkout page, ALL of the available payment methods, ie. credit, paypal, etc, are offered as well as the manual payment method.

I'd like to make it to where a customer with items ineligible for free shipping in their carts, are only offered the manul payment choice, instead of the other options. This would avoid confusion and frustration from me having to tell them that they will have to be charged twice for their shipping since it wasn't included.

So to the point.. Is it possible to add manual payment method to a specific product in your store?

If so, how would you do it? Is there a way to add a tag to make this happen?

Thanks!

Not possible on Shopify's checkout unless your a Plus store.  You could however make an alternate template that removes the add to cart button and replaces it with an email address field, address field, etc, asking for a quote and having it email you at that time.  This would be a pretty simple thing to add.

I'm actually a coder by trade, so I do agree this would be a pretty simple task. I'm just wonder, would I be able to target specific products using my custom template, or would it also be a cookie cutter type of template that would target all products in the store? I'm new to shopify and am not sure of the mechanics yet, or how to target specific products. Thanks!

This is an accepted solution.

You could either make an alternate template as per https://help.shopify.com/en/themes/customization/store/create-alternate-templates and replace it with the code from the contact-us form in the editor.

Or you could add to your current one, and use tags.

{% if product.tags == 'quoteNeeded' %}
Code here for contact us
{% else %}
Code here for add to cart button
{% endif %}

Code is a rough equation. ^^  Might need to tinker with it.
