Shipping Art from the UK

Hello there,

I'm looking at opening my new shop soon showcasing my paintings and drawings.

One thing I'm having a difficult time with is shipping. I will need to sell my stuff internationally. I'd like to make it as easy as possible for customers to know how much their shipping will be exactly, depending on the options they choose.

I know I might be asking for the impossible but is there a free workaround for this? An app that gives customers clarity and choice with regards to getting their art shipped to them?

Many thanks for any information you can offer. I'm currently unable to purchase additional paid apps so would appreciate it if you can suggest alternatives.

Have a good day.

Hello @memax,

Shopify offers merchants in the United States, Canada, and Australia access to discounted rates with USPS, UPS, DHL Express, Canada Post, and Sendle, where Shopify store owners can compare the shipping rates from different carriers and choose either the cheapest rate or based on the customer preference.

To ship the products internationally a third-party shipping carrier app is necessary to ease the international shipping process.

The Multi-Carrier Shipping Label app, while using multiple carriers will simply select the cheapest shipping rates among the available services and proceed with it. This literally saves shipping costs for you.

Hi @memax,

Congrats on the new store. No doubt this is both an exciting and stressful time.

You can ship internationally through Shopify without the use of a third-party app. It isn't necessary.

There are some limitations, though. One of the most notable limitations is the packaging option. Shopify limits you to having only one default package size, despite the fact that you can add several package sizes. That means live rates for every order will be calculated using just one package size.

Using a third-party app does have the benefit of giving your customers the clarify and choice you're looking for. More importantly, you won't lose a ton of money - either on shipping costs or abandoned carts - by charging them incorrectly as a result of mismatched or oversized packaging.

There are a number of art and print shops that use Intuitive Shipping for this reason. With Intuitive Shipping, you can add multiple package options, define which products use those packages and even how many items go in one package. For example, if you ship in both tubes and flat packages, you can define when those packages are used in the calculation. When it makes more sense for you to look at a third-party solution, please feel free to reach out to our team for more information. If you like, you can book a one-on-one demo to learn more and ask any questions you might have in real-time.

Please note: when using any third-party rate calculator, including Intuitive Shipping, Shopify requires you to have their third-party carrier-calculated rates feature enabled. If you're on either the 'Basic' or 'Shopify' plan, this feature costs USD $20/ month. If you switch to annual billing, Shopify will include the feature at no extra cost and give you 10% off the plan. If you're on the 'Advanced' plan or higher, the feature is already included. You'll also need to enable this feature if you're connecting to live rate carriers directly through Shopify (outside of their discounted rates option).

All the best with your shop! We hope your opening is a successful one.

Best regards,

Ron

Hi there Ron,

Thank you for taking the time to send me that information.

Unfortunately, I'm over my budget so will need to look at workarounds for this. Many items are expensive and will need appropriate insurance added.

I'm kind of stumped at how I can do this, to be honest. I don't want my customers to be surprised by the additional costs for shipping with insurance and ideally should know up front how much they need to pay.

Thanks,

Max
