Shipping several items ordered together with one charge. How do I set this up?

I assume it would be by weight, but how is that set up? When items weight different amounts?

Hi, @barbo!

I'm Miles from the Social Care team at Shopify. Setting up your shipping rates can be done by using the total carts weight or the order totals. You can set up free, flat, or calculated shipping rates that appear in the checkout for your customers.

Before you make any shipping rates, create the different regions that should get their own shipping rates. For example, you might want to have one set of shipping rates for customers in Europe, and a different set of rates for customers in North America. These different regions are called shipping zones.

To set up flat rate shipping (fixed price) based on weight or order totals, follow these steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  2. Next to the shipping profile that you want to add a shipping rate to, click Manage rates.
  3. Next to the zone that you want to add a rate to, click Add rate.
  4. Enter the name and amount for the rate.
  5. Click Add conditions.
  6. Select whether to base the condition on order weight or price.
  7. Enter the minimum and maximum value for the condition.
  8. Click Done, and then click Save.

If a customer has placed multiple orders and you're shipping them together, you'll need to chat with your courier/postal service on how you'll be charged as you'll be charged on the total package weight, not individually based on each order. Be sure to check out our helpful guide on Setting up and managing your shipping and delivery to learn more about shipping.

Once you've set up your shipping rates, it's a great idea to create a shipping policy to protect your business as well as building customer trust. We have a great guide to walk you through setting these up along with some other great policies you can add to your business including:

  • Refund policy
  • Privacy policy
  • Terms of service
  • Shipping policy
  • Legal notice
  • COVID-19 prevention policy

Hey there,
This is known as conditional shipping and the packaging is called Volumetric shipping based on product weight and dimensions.
You can do this by creating a packaging condition in shipping settings.
To configure the packing method, head to App Settings –> Shipping –> Packaging, and choose the required packing method as weight-based packaging.

This packing method is based on the products’ weight. You can set a maximum weight limit for your box and the app automatically packs the maximum number of products possible in this box based on the maximum weight defined.

This is the recommended packing method since most often weight is used as a parameter to handle the packaging and calculate accurate shipping rates. So, by default, the app will calculate the rates based on this packaging method.

In the below image, the maximum weight is configured as 50 lbs. This means that in this particular box, items with a maximum weight of 50 lbs can be packed. So, as soon as the weight of the entire package crosses this value (50 lbs), the app will automatically select another box, and the remaining items are packed.
