Show accelerated payment methods on checkout payment step (not just cart page)

Hi, @Wildsider.

Tira here, from Shopify.

Thanks for joining the thread. I understand that you want accelerated checkouts to appear on both the cart and checkout. Your customers are also seeing a delivery option at checkout when they add two products into their cart, and you only need to show the pick-up option. Is that right?

The accelerated checkout buttons can only appear on either the cart page or the checkout page, and not both pages. If you have the buttons appearing on your cart page, then you can customize your code to hide the buttons on your cart page. When this happens, it will add the buttons to your checkout pages.

If you're comfortable with coding, you can login to your Shopify admin, and click on "Online Store > Themes". On the theme you wish to edit, click on "Actions > Edit Code". In the search box, you can search for this line of code:

{% if additional_checkout_buttons %}

<div class="additional-checkout-buttons">{{ content_for_additional_checkout_buttons }} </div>

{% endif %}

You'll then need to tell the system to ignore this code, so we can add in {% comment %} and {% endcomment %} around the above code like this:

{% comment %}
  {% if additional_checkout_buttons %}
    <div class="additional-checkout-buttons">{{ content_for_additional_checkout_buttons }}</div>
  {% endif %}
{% endcomment %}

Then your cart page should no longer have the accelerated checkout buttons there, but on your checkout page. If you need to go back to your default code for your theme, you can roll back your theme to a previous date to revert back any changes by following the steps in our help doc here: Roll back your theme.

May I have your store URL so that I can take a look at what your checkout looks like when someone tries to put an order through for two products?

Hi Tira,

Thanks for your reply. My url is: https://www.wildsidebread.com/

I think I have resolved the two-product issue. However, I would still prefer the accelerated payment options to be at checkout. Also, a number of people have said that Apple Pay didn’t work for them and I couldn’t establish why. They wee also confused as to why Apple Pay requests a delivery address when all my products are pick-up only.
Finally, a number of my customers bought multiple products would different pick up dates... for example a monthly subscription and a single item... but I am only able to send one pick up notification which them sends a misleading message suggesting all products are ready to collect. Is there any way for me to isolate the products in the notice. Also - if someone buys a month’s subscription, I need to send a pick up notice each week of the month. Am I able to do this or does the system restrict me to sending just one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I’ve also had feedback that Google Pay wasn’t working – similar issue around a conflict with delivery address. Customers (that stay) ultimately have to use a credit card option.

Hi, Ruth.

Thanks for your reply and I appreciate these details. I can confirm that when two products are added to your cart, I see the pick-up option.

Here’s a screenshot of what this looks like:

Is this what you’re seeing, too?

I looked into this further for you and the pick-up option at checkout is currently unavailable for unsupported accelerated checkouts that include Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and Paypal. This means that customers will see a delivery option, but not a pick-up option when using these payment methods at checkout. I know providing accelerated checkout options like Apple Pay and Google Pay are important to you and your customers, with only the pick-up option showing at checkout, so what I can do is forward your feedback to our developers so that they are aware of how they can improve Shopify for you and all of our merchants. If we move ahead with this, we will list the updates in our changelog or announcements page

If your customers want a faster way to checkout, then you can set-up Shop Pay on your store. Shop Pay is our in-house accelerated checkout that saves the email address, credit card, shipping and billing addresses so that your customers can complete faster checkout on your store. Check out how to enable it here: Enabling Shop Pay.

If you need to modify your notification for an order that is ready for pick-up, you can customize the notification with Liquid. Check out our help doc for the steps to access your notifications here: Customize the order confirmation for local pick-up. If you’re not familiar with Liquid, you could look into hiring a Shopify Expert to help. Shopify Experts help with coding customizations to enhance the features of your store. You may want to modify your notification to inform your customers about the difference between a product that is ready for pick-up, and a product that is on a monthly subscription. I'm not sure if there is a way to set multiple pick-up dates, I can definitely do some digging on this for you and reply to this thread when I have an update.

What are you currently using to set-up your monthly subscriptions?

Many thanks for your reply.

I have been in touch with a contact in Financial Services too and have been directed to the live chat to try to resolve ShopPay issues (also not working with Pick up). They mentioned that it could because my bank details are not in the system, but they are and I am receiving payouts without any problem. I do t think this is the source of the problem. If I turn ShopPay on, I have to set up multiple locations (which I don’t have) and my customary get a message to say that products are not available for pick up at my main location. This is confusing and inaccurate. It’s proving very frustrating and I’m losing customers who tried - and failed - to make a purchase while ShopPay was enabled.

I am not using any third-party app for subscriptions. I just sell them as a single product. I will be able to notify those customers once - on Fri 6th Dec that their first (loaf) is ready for pick-up, but sounds like I won’t be able to alert them each week, so I will have to find some other way to do that, manually. If you know of any other solution to this, I would welcome your thoughts.

With regard to accelerated payments... is there a reason the usual ones won’t work with a pick-up option? Seems short-sighted and not particularly environmentally friendly. I encourage my customers to collect on foot to avoid food miles.

Many thanks

Thanks for breaking the details down for me, Ruth. This is helpful.

I looked into these for you with our Shop Pay Specialists and it looks like Shop Pay doesn’t need multiple locations, and should work with Local Pick-up. As a refresher, here are the requirements to set-up Shop Pay from our help doc: Setting up Shop Pay. I’m curious as to how multiple locations are coming up on your store. Could you please send an email to help@shop.app so that our specialists can take a look at your store?

If you’re open to sending out an email campaign through Shopify Email, you could send an email each week to certain customers to notify them of their weekly pick-ups. Shopify Email is our in-house email marketing tool that allows you to send your own email campaigns to your customers directly from your Shopify admin. To view the requirements to install Shopify Email, set-up Shopify Email and pricing details, I recommend checking out our help doc here: Setting up Shopify Email. You can set-up your email campaigns so that they send to a specific group of customers: Email a Specific Group of Customers.

Our Local Pickup option only has the ability to let a customer choose where they want to pick-up, without a specific date. Since you’re looking to add multiple dates for pick-up to your store, I found an app called Store Pickup + Delivery by Zapiet that can help by letting your customers choose a date and time to pick-up their orders. If you want to explore other options, we do have apps that are similar, listed here: Local Pick-up Apps. These apps are developed by third-party developers. For any questions, please reach out to their support team by using the information listed under the "Support" section of the app's page.

To answer your question about accelerated payment options at checkout, I know that there are technical developments that would need to take place. I have forwarded your feedback to our developers to let them know that this is a feature you would like to see on Shopify, and how it would help your business succeed. If we move forward with this, we will let you and all of our merchants know, and post about it in our changelog or announcements page

Let me know if this helps you accomplish what you want to do.
