We make our goods inside our retail shop. Local people buy online but don't want to pay for shipping so, we have an option that says "Local Pickup - Denton Texas Only"....
We've been having customers choose this option that live out of state because they obviously want free shipping. When they do this we have to email each customer and ask them if they plan on picking it up locally and, of course, they say no I didn't mean to choose that option. So we then have to send them a Paypal invoice for the shipping cost.
Is there anything we can do to fix this problem? Geo targeting the customers location that gives them the "Local Pickup" option during checkout? Or is there nothing that can be done?
If you have the unlimited plan or better (or pay for it), you have the Carrier Shipping API. With that, you can deploy a simple App that will decide what shipping rates to provide the customer. If the customer provides a zip code from outside your "local" designated circle for pickup (how to do that remains a task for the App) you could choose to NOT show that free shipping option. That would eliminate the problem for most orders, except for those customers that live outside that free zone and do truly want to expend the effort to make the trip to pick it up. They would not see the option even if they wanted it.
It's always nice to participate in a public, community forum, but keeping secrets is not really where it is at Wiz.. cause hey, if you tell this one merchant via email and not the hundreds or thousands of others perusing this forum... you'll spoil some secret "elegant" solution...??? How does that make any sense Shipping Wiz? Is that nice? Does it add up?
If you know something elegant, why don't you just share it and be nice.

Also looking for a solution. Used the methods described elsewhere to add a special shipping option "Local Pickup" that's free. However, it's default selected at checkout page and prone to customers not seeing this is selected. It's turned off for every other state at least.

The app doesn't require carrier calculated shipping. It works on any Shopify package.

i am attempting to set up an online shop (no easy task for someone who gets lost trying to find her own email)-i am JUST starting-as in-setting up ship options. i am super freaking lost as to offer free local pick-up to (duh!) local buyers,yet still keep the ship options/details available. i will be selling new & previously loved (ahhh.doesn't that sound so sweet?) women's fashions.i live in a small farm town & 98% of the people here have never even HEARD of paypal...& i am not prepared to deliver boots,jeans,& a makeup pallet by goat, so the local pick-up is a must. PLEASE.HELP.ME. SOS!
