One of our clients has unique taxation rules by state - where some products are taxed in certain states but not others.
Currently Shopify supports taxation by state - but it is all or nothing. Either the product is taxable OR you can disable taxation.
My question - is it possible to tap into the cart/checkout process with (a) custom JSON call to external API (to run the calculation again) and (b) override the Shopify-determined sales tax amount?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi there!
My name is Julian, I am a developer at Shopify.
I came across this post today and am pleased that we now have a solution for tax overrides!
You can find out more with this doc: http://docs.shopify.com/manual/settings/taxes/tax-overrides
Hope this new feature will help your business!

Hi Philippe,
If you follow this document, it will help you set everything up! We have intended these tax overrides to work for as much as your need, so we have created them similarly to collections.
You can have manual tax overrides, in which you add products manually.
And you can have automatic tax overrides, which overrides based on a tag on a product.
Check the document out here: http://docs.shopify.com/manual/settings/taxes/tax-overrides

Hi Julian,
I have just changed over to have taxes specified automatically because I saw the new override option. Is it possible to override an entire state including the county and city tax for a certain collection? When I go to override, it only gives me the option for the state and then county and city of our physical location and not all counties and cities in the entire state. Thank you for your time!
Brook
Brook,
I don't believe orders places to counties and cities for which you don't have a physical presence will actually get charged any sales tax, so you should be ok to override just the rates you see there.
Also, you don't need to switch to our automatic tax system to use our Tax Overrides feature. Using the manual tax setup you used to use, you can still create an override for any state and pick a collection and have a different rate for those products.

Hi Gareth,
Thank you for the reply! I do actually like the option of the automatic tax system because we do need to charge county/city tax as well as state tax and the automatic option would be best.
I did try test orders to different cities in the state with the override and it does still charge the tax if I override the county/city we have a presence in. It does not charge tax if the shipment is in the county/city we have a presence in. But I don't want it to charge any tax for the whole state and counties/cities on a certain collection but it looks to me like there is not an option at this time to override all counties and cities in the state? Thanks!
Brook
All of this manual tax exemption and setup seems very daunting. Will Shopify allow an external tax calculation to be completed to determine what the tax collected should be? We are trying to build an app to help our specific vertical of customers that need to have real time destination and product specific tax calculations done for each order. We are already managing tax in our system and have many other eComm companies using our tax calculation of order processing.
Has anything changed recently for this?
Also, I would be careful about offering legal advice about who should collect tax and when, nexus (physical presence) is not the only thing that determines tax :)
Cheers,
Emily
Hi Marius,
I don't think its quite possible to do this out of the box, its a very specific feature. However, I think the "Customer Pricing" application may be your best bet. Bold Apps is the company that makes this app, you should be able to contact them here for any questions on the app's capabilities.
Hope this helps!
All the best,
