Use RMA app or Shopify APIs to retrieve tacking numbers and returning items?

If a Shopify store integrates with a third party RMA app (like Returnly), will a return be created in Shopify when a customer requests an exchange via the RMA?

We're building an app that will need to receive the return tracking number and the returning items for orders we place in a Shopify store. Wondering if it's best to use Shopify's APIs for this or the RMA's APIs?
