Hi there!
I have a small shop selling dog treats/pet accessories and this week I opened up shipping from Canada (on some products) to the USA. I've followed all the steps I can find online but the currency is still not showing up as US. When I downloaded the geolocation app, it was still not helpful (I read to try from a different browser and so I did but still no luck). I'm unsure how to display US currency as an option in my shop.

I think you need to activate multi-currency in your store: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/multi-currency/setup
