I have researched a lot of Shopify apps but I can't seem to find an app that allows customers to subscribe to recurring payment through PayPaæ.
I sell software with a subscription where my customers pay monthly with Paypal. I'm currently on a Wix shop but I want to switch Shopify because Wix is not at a good platform at all.
Are there any apps that allow me to step up recurring payments with Paypal?
Thanks in advance

This is an accepted solution.
Julie here from Shopify Support.
Great question! I took a look into a few popular subscription apps for you and did manage to find a couple options that offer PayPal as a recurring payment method. Both Subscriptions by Recharge and Recurring Payments & Orders look like they are capable of processing recurring PayPal payments via Braintree.
With these apps, you can offer customers recurring billing while also getting access to extra features like analytics, upsells, customizable subscription plans, and more.If you'd like to learn more about Subscriptions by Recharge, feel free to check out their help documentation on payment processors here. Recurring Payments & Orders, on the other hand, has information on how to connect with PayPal here.
These apps are both quite popular and have excellent reviews; I recommend exploring both of these options to see which one works the best for you. To try them out, however, you'll first need to sign up for a Shopify account if you haven't already done so. You can get started with a free trial here.
What kind of subscription business do you have? I'd love to hear more about your business and the products you're offering.
Hey, @kessieramirez! Thanks for joining in on the conversation.
Because recurring app charges are billed with each Shopify 30-day invoice, it wouldn't be possible to adjust the billing cycle for app charges. I should also note that when it comes to third-party apps, the developers themselves are responsible for setting their own prices and determining how they'd like their app charges billed.
You can typically find pricing information on each app's page in the Shopify App Store, or directly on their website, which you can find a link to under the Support section of each app's About page.
For more information on the different types of app charges and how they are billed, I recommend checking out our help doc on app charges. This should offer further clarity as to how apps are charged.
I hope this helps!
Is Shopify still planning to offer native recurring payments for subscription businesses? My interest is for digital goods.
I still have this message in my notes from your customer conference in the spring of 2019.
The checkout app extension for subscriptions will be available later this year. Buyers will no longer be routed outside of Shopify’s checkout to complete their transactions. Developers will be able to integrate their subscription apps into the checkout experience, surface their app’s information into Shopify’s checkout, and give merchants the ability to process transactions for subscription goods and services within one seamless checkout experience.
I recall it was planned for the end of 2019 and then moved to May 2020.
It would be helpful to know if this is still in the works -
Thanks for joining in on the conversation.
I appreciate your interest in the subscriptions! While we are still working on integrating subscriptions with the Shopify checkout, there is no confirmed date for the feature release. To stay updated, I recommend signing up for the Shopify Developer Changelog so we can email you when new features are released.
Are you using any subscription apps in the meantime?
Thanks for the update Julie,
We have not used a third party Shopify app; don't want to spend on the development if this is pending. Is it still in the works? It would be helpful to know.
I liked the way this was announced; 'Buyers will no longer be routed outside of Shopify’s checkout to complete their transactions. Developers will be able to integrate their subscription apps into the checkout experience, surface their app’s information into Shopify’s checkout, and give merchants the ability to process transactions for subscription goods and services within one seamless checkout experience.'
We currently use Stripe for recurring subscriptions. We'd like to standardize on one platform.
No problem, @wjb! That's completely understandable.
This is definitely still in the works and while I don't have a concrete timeline to share, I recommend subscribing to the changelog I shared above so we can reach out directly as soon as the feature is released.
The new subscriptions feature is quite exciting and I'm really looking forward to it being rolled out as well. Having your customers complete their subscription purchase directly within the standard Shopify checkout is going to make the order process quite smooth and seamless.
It's great to see your enthusiasm for this new feature. Keep your eyes out for some news from us in the near future!
Welcome to the conversation! I'm glad to see you've been perusing the Shopify Community and I'd love to help you find a payment option for your business.
Before we begin, I should mention that this thread is specifically for merchants looking for a recurring payment option through PayPal; are you considering other payment options outside of PayPal? If so, there are quite a few subscription apps in the Shopify App Store that support a variety of different payment gateways.
Since you're looking for the most cost-effective solution, my suggestion would be to look into either Recurring Order & Subscription or Recurring Payments & Orders. Both of these apps offer free plans and have excellent reviews.
With Recurring Order & Subscription, customers will process their transaction through Shopify's online checkout, using the payment gateway you have setup in Settings > Payments. If you haven't yet chosen a payment gateway for your business, you can browse through the available options in your country here. It's important to note that this app won't automatically process the recurring payments, however. Instead, it will automatically email your customers a recurring invoice, prompting them to complete their payment.
Recurring Payments & Orders, on the other hand, will direct customers to a third-party checkout, using a payment gateway called PayWhirl. This means you will need to create an account with PayWhirl and when you install the app, you'll be prompted to do so. Unlike the option above, this app will give you the ability to automatically process the payments on a recurring basis.
Have you already setup a payment gateway in Settings > Payments? If so, which payment gateway are you using?
