I am new to shopify but have been coding wordpress themes for a couple of years now. I am building a site by tweaking the 'minimal' theme to suit my needs. I want the home page (index) to stay full width, but I want to add a sidebar to the interior collection pages that shows category link lists. I know I would need to add a sidebar under snippets, similar to the blog_sidebar.liquid and populate that with the link lists, then add it to the collection.liquid page. I am just looking for suggestions on how to code this. Thanks!
I would highly recommend getting the Responsive theme, because it makes it easy to add a sidebar to collection pages, that's done via a theme setting, and people who like Minimal usually like Responsive: http://themes.shopify.com/themes/responsive/styles/paris Adding a sidebar to the Minimal theme collection pages requires many changes to be made to the theme's files. Not for the faint at heart.
Thanks, it does look like a nice theme, but I have already made so many modifications to minimal that it would be more work to change. I have the snippet and settings files ready to go and the CSS for the widget bar, I just need to figure out how to adjust the collections page to put it in there correctly. Appreciate any help!
Let's begin with collection.liquid then.
How many items are you showing per row now?
That can be changed on the theme settings page.
We need to know what span's to use for the sidebar and 'content' section, based on how many items per row you have now.
