Add supplementary products - Let users choose a frame to an artwork

Hi all,

I am building a shop that sells art prints. I want to add the option to choose a supplementary frame for all products (a bit similar to a bundle) I ran into some issues. I will get some help from a developer building this but I first want to figure out what the most sustainable option is. Here are some thoughts:

  • Right now I am doing it with variants. Upside: I have a CSS layover over the product image that shows a mockup of how the artwork will look with the frame. That saves the hustle of creating all the mockups in PSD. Downside: We can't track the inventory for the artwork and the frames separately
  • I tried using an upsell plugin (Ultimate Upsell) but it's not working to great. Also it seems to me that it's a bit of an overkill and not a great fit for what I want to achieve
  • What is your thought on building this customized within Shopify? The crux is that we will have 5 types of frames sizes with 4 colors each and the option to go without frame. The suggested frame size has to be somehow defined for each product. From what I read, metafields might be an option here to assign the right frames to the right products.

I attached some mockups on how I intend it to look and work. Interested to hear your take on how to best approach this. As I said I'm happy to work out the details with a developer.

Thanks for hearing me out!

hey there.  At the moment it sounds like you need an accessories app like https://apps.shopify.com/product-accessories

this is something I have been debating coding into a theme but have not gotten around to it yet.

Thanks Duncan,

just set it up and it seems like it's pretty much what I need. Just need to figure out how I can get the CSS frames to work with that but should be doable. I will post my experiences for others here.

For sure mate.  Would not be the end of the world to code it in as well, but its a lot of work and the app is cheap ;)

If you decide you want to save the money I can give you some general run downs on how to add to cart via links.  One day I will get unlazy and code that app into a section ;) haha

Duncan.

Are you doing it via permalinks? I sure would love to save the money but since it works I'd rather stick with it for the moment :-)

aye.  The Permalink Docs talk about how to go straight to checkout, but you can do add to cart as well.

/cart/updates?update[Variant_ID]=#

will do it.  You can then link multiples together.

If you show me your store, Im happy to make you an example.

Duncan.

Great thanks. The difficulty is that:

  1. All accessory products have 4 variants from which the user has to choose before adding to cart
  2. The accessory product depends on the size of the artwork

So it's better if the customer can see and chose the accessory before adding the two products to cart together. The permalink will just to the latter and I would still have to somehow show the accessories for the user to select. The app does both so that's fine. See it in action here.
