I know this has been brought up many times, but i just checked out shopify 2 beta and was sad still not to see this feature. Is there any news on whether this is coming or is planned? It seems to me like it would be rather easy to implement and would make a lot of things easier. Just like the recently added 'alt tag' you could just have an option called 'variant' where you could select the associated variant.
I know that you can do various workarounds, but this is still rather impractical and forces certain unintended use of either alt tags, SKUs or image ordering. There is also still no way of getting the right product variant image in the cart either. We have been seriously considering to change to a model where all our products have no variants just to achieve this.. Although quite a hassle and impractical as well, several customers have been mentioning that they have found it confusing.
I can see it was mentioned more than 2 years ago, is there any news?
Thanks for your quick reply. This seems very nifty indeed, i've tried adding it to this product.
It does not seem to affect the image shown once on the checkout pages?
It does not work on my product page either, but i wasn't expecting that since we use modified stuff.. :-)
Liquid doesn't know about the images you've specified in the Variant Images app, but there is a "hack" you can do to associate images with alt tags that might be helpful in what you are trying to achieve: http://www.tetchi.ca/shopify-tutorial-associating-product-variants-with-product-images/
That won't help in the cart though unfortunately CoverMe. This is the only thread that I know of (three years old) that will help you and it is a hack: http://ecommerce.shopify.com/c/ecommerce-design/t/displaying-correct-image-for-variants-in-shopping-...
You may be able to make something work with that. Hope it helps! That will work for cart but not checkout. If you think that will confuse your customers then you can always hide the thumbnails in checkout with CSS.
Thanks for your replies.
@Mark - I've seen that, but thanks for the link. Was what i ment with "I know that you can do various workarounds, but this is still rather impractical and forces certain unintended use of either alt tags, SKUs or image ordering"
@Jamie - Thanks for the link. I've already figured out how to do it for the cart, which I might end up doing and just hiding it when in at checkout, even though I think it would be a loss not to be able to display the proper product variant image in the checkout.
Was just hoping that there had been some progress on this from shopify's side. :-)
Thanks for your thoughts CoverMe and I apologize for your troubles. If we could go back in time we would include variant images natively in Shopify and while it isn't a apart of a current roadmap I'm sure when we have an opportunity to make improvements to our products engine this will be high on the list.
