Installing Google Tag Manager

Hi there,

I have been asked to Install Google Tag Manager to my website. A marketing company has requested I Copy the code & paste it onto every page of your website, as high in the <head> of the page as possible. Then with a second sett of code paste immediately after the opening <body> tag.

Do I just add both of these into the theme.liquid file? I don't know how to add to every page of my website?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Adele,

Yes, the theme.liquid file contains both the <head> and <body> tags and essentially wraps every page on your website.

So adding your GTM code to theme.liquid file would run on every page.

Hi, I see some blog suggests to add the code to the “checkout.liquid” file as well as theme.liquid file.

Do I really to do so after I've added the code to the theme.liquid? I've tried, but I didn't find the “checkout.liquid” file

Edwin11, I'm having the same issue. I was told by Shopify Theme Specialists that the checkout.liquid is only available for Shopify plus subscribers. I wish more detail about limitations to the different plans were outlined. Its quite the jump from $29 per month to $299 for plus. I would think all the plans would have the ability to add these codes which are crucial for our business success and in turn, Shopify's success. They take a processing fee for our order totals, it seems they are leaving a lot of money on the table by limiting our ability to create successful marking campaigns which would result in a lot more money for us AND Shopify.

Hello everyone, would any of you be able to tell me, if I install the GTM in my Shopify store  which is also basic account ($29.00) it means I wont be able to track the check out page  at all, like page visits, or it means I wont be able to retarget the checkout page visitors, like creating pixels  to the visitors. Thanks in advance.

Shopify Plus starts at £2,000/m. I think you mean Advances at $299 which doesn’t allow access to the checkout.

Hi there. I saw your answer about Google Tag Manager here and I just wondering if it works together with Shopify? I read that you need Shopify Plus if you want to configure with GTM, is that correct?
