Migrating Customer logins (and passwords) to shopify?

Has anyone been successful in migrating from Open cart to Shopify and bringing across your customer logins and passwords?

From my understanding, it can be done with Woocommerce but maybe not shopify?

Any help would be great.

Hi, there.

Hyde here from Shopify. That's a great question!

While there may be a Woocommerce-to-Shopify help document, Opencart is open source, so there likely isn't a one-size-fits-all method for migrating.

We do have a great help document on migrating to Shopify here.

Migrating can be done manually, meaning products and customers can be imported via CSV - we have information on CSVs for you here.

The help document covers what CSVs are, how you can correctly create and format them, and importing and exporting them. There's even a sample CSV you can work off of.

There's also a service called Cart2Cart that could be of interest to you!

If you have any other questions about this though, I'm happy to help.

All the best, Hyde.

Shopify works as a cart service, so data security is paramount and there's no way you can access database to transfer customer passwords and logins to Shopify.

Thanks so much for your reply – its all so confusing! I will give them a go, thanks again!

Thanks a lot for mentioning Cart2Cart here.

The service has been developed with end-users in mind allowing to perform the OpenCart to Shopify switch automatedly and with minimal human involvement in the process.

The list of supported entities that can be imported to Shopify includes products, product categories, manufacturers, customers, orders, coupons and other related data. Besides, if you want to make your replatforming even more seamless, you can benefot from Additional Migration Options (like migrate categories and products SEO URLs, preserve order IDs on new Shopify store, migrate images from product descriptions and blog posts descriptions, etc.).

Those e-merchants willing to see how the service works in progress, can previously launch free Demo migration and estimate its results on their new Shopify store.

Hello @milo33 ,

I totally disagree with all the answers. As I might know, Shopify API doesn't support to migrate customers' passwords. In fact, the password cannot be decompiled, so how can Shopify understand the password hash of Opencart? Because the method of encoding and reading the code is also different, so if you just copy and login then customer security will be threatened. Therefore, you CAN NOT migrate customer logins and passwords to Shopify.

In case you need to move other data from OpenCart to Shopify, you can use an automated migration tool called LitExtension. It can help migrate your data automatically and successfully with 3 clicks and just in a few hours.

What data can be possibly moved from OpenCart to Shopify?

  1. Products (Name, SKU, Full Description, Status, Manufacturer, Price, Special Price, Meta Title, Meta Description, Product Tags, UPC, Variants: (Price, Special Price, Name), Additional Images, Quantity)
  2. Product Categories (Name, Description, Status, Image, Meta Title, Meta Description)
  3. Manufacturers (Name)
  4. Customers (First Name, Last Name, Email, Newsletter, Billing Address, Shipping Address, Address)
  5. Orders (Order Date, Order Status, Order Products: (Name, SKU, Option), Product Price, Quantity, Discount Price, Tax Price, Total Price, Order Comments, Shipping Price, Customer Name, Email, Billing Address, Shipping Address
  6. Coupons (Coupon Code, Coupon Date, Coupon Expire Date)
  7. Reviews (Created Date, User Name, Comment)
  8. Cms Pages (Title, URL, Description)

For further information, you can visit their site or run a demo migration (it's FREE) then contact their support agents via live chat to fully understand how the tool works.

My name is Alison, and I'm the Customer Success Specialist for Ablestar apps. We have a WooCommerce to Shopify migration tool, which I know is not what you need, but I did want to let you know how we handle migrating customer accounts.  I think you could probably find an app that does something similar for Open cart.

After we migrate customers, we generate a CSV file of activation links that you can use with a mail merge program to invite customers to login and update their information. So we are able to migrate their customer info, but not the passwords.  The customers need the activation link to be able to log in.

Sorry to put back this old topic but Alison could you please tell me how to send the activation link?

I have 1400 customers and I would not have to do it by hand
