Product image functionality (with colour variations)

How can I change the order that product images for products with colour variations. We have a product with 8 colour variations. We have the colour swatches enabled. Each colour has a unique image, but then we have around 5 images which are general for all colours. Right now it shows each colour image first and the general images last. So users have to scroll through 8 identical images (only different in colour) until getting to the other 5 images.

Ideally it should only show the colour image for the colour swatch selected followed by the other 5 images. And then when we click a new colour only the first image is replaced. Is there an app that can do this?

I'm not sure for app but with code yes it's possible.
Basic idea is with a callback function you have to exclude the image which doesn't belongs to specific variant on selection of swatch (variant) but keep the selected variant images + general images.
