Add a notes field to products

Hi there,

Any one knows what code and where would I need to paste it to have a "private notes" field under the product template in the back office.

The idea is to use the field to write company comments on the product that do not get posted on the website. Just for private use.

Thank you,

Hi, Carlos!

I’m Melissa, a Shopify Guru. Thanks for posting.

Currently, there is no 'out of the box' solution to adding internal notes to products. however, a possible workaround would be to utilize meta fields (https://help.shopify.com/themes/liquid/objects/metafield) to do this. Meta fields require basic knowledge of HTML and Liquid to make these changes in conjunction with an app. There is a blog post on how this would work here: http://bit.ly/2nHwnXI. Below you will find some popular ones that are worth checking out.

It might be worth checking out to see if it could work for you. Hope this information helps! You can reach out to the Guru team   https://docs.shopify.com/support  if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

Why?  This should be very easy to do for shop owners.

Agree!  Right now we are going through and updating inventory numbers, would be great to add a note on the product once it is complete so we do not duplicate efforts.

This would be a really helpful addition, especially for inventory/wholesale-related comments!! Shopify I hope you'll consider adding a private "notes" field on individual products.

Yes! We desperately need this, too!

Ideally, we would have an "internal notes" field for each product variant, not just each product. We currently use the SKU field so that all of the staff can see the info on one screen in the Shopify app. We tried using meta fields, but it's just too clunky to have to jump to a new screen when staff members are out in the retail nursery helping customers look for plants...

Tying up the SKU field will not work for us for long, since we plan to sync our inventory with POS.

Please get a software dev team to implement this. Most basic inventory software has a text field to make internal notes, when an inventory was corrected, or what SKUs to use with what...

Another temporary and free solution is to use the GraphiQL app to view and edit metafields:

1. Read:

query {
  product(id:"gid://shopify/Product/6282828775576") {
    id
    metafields(first:10) {
      edges {
        node {
          id
          key
          value
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

2. Create:

mutation($input: ProductInput!) {
  productUpdate(input: $input) {
    product {
      metafields(first: 100) {
        edges {
          node {
            namespace
            key
            value
          }
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

 ... with variables:

{
  "input" : {
    "id": "gid://shopify/Product/1",
    "metafields": [
      {
        "namespace": "instructions",
        "key": "wash",
        "value": "cold wash",
        "type": "single_line_text_field",
      }
    ]
  }
}

3. Edit:

mutation($input: ProductInput!) {
  productUpdate(input: $input) {
    product {
      metafields(first: 99) {
        edges {
          node {
            id
          }
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

... with variables:

{
  "input" : {
    "id": "gid://shopify/Product/6282828775576",
    "metafields": [{"id":"gid://shopify/Metafield/19619355099288", "value": "New value"}]
  }
}

4. Delete:

mutation($input: MetafieldDeleteInput!) {
  metafieldDelete(input: $input) {
    deletedId
  }
}

... with variables:

{"input": {
  	"id": "gid://shopify/Metafield/19624888565912"
	}
}
