At what point is a customized theme yours? Do web coding copyrights even hold up?

Look all over the internet for this answer but can't really find one...

After purchasing a theme from the theme store, but make changes to it, when does the theme become yours?  Like how much do you have to alter a theme before it's now your design and you can use it for clients?

Does it ever?  Or do you have to create it entirely from scratch?  It's just interesting to me as this is all code, so code has to be executed in certain ways, so can you really copyright coding?  There's only one correct way to display and image, etc.

These themes say you have to pay for licensing for each site, but how will they ever know if you use it more than once?

Maybe someone has these answers, but I had zero luck finding them.

Thanks in advance!

Let's say you write a book, and all the words you use in that book are from the dictionary. Should they copyright strike you then? After all, you just use the words that you copy in the dictionary and put them in a certain order.
