Automated weight to collection

Hi there, is there any way to have a rule set up so that a weight is applied to collections so that I dont' have to use an app that automatically runs that rule weekly?

i.e. all tees in my shop will be 0.2kg, all footwear will be 1kg

Thank you

Hi @karmalee,

Nick here from Shopify. Great question.

The only way to apply a weight right now is for each product individually, it wouldn't be possible to do it via collections. Once each product has been assigned a weight you would need to create a shipping rate in your settings so the total weight of the order would be calculated to give the most appropriate shipping rate for your customer. One thing you could do is bulk edit the weights of a group of products. If you go to Admin > Products and then select the products you would like to edit the weight of and then select Edit Products. Once here, you need to select Add Fields > Shipping > Weight and the weight bar will appear on the right-hand side. Here you can adjust multiple product weight's at the same time should you wish. You can see an example of how this would look from the screenshot below:

You can also see the helpful guide Shopify has for this here

Hopefully this helps!

All the best, Nick

Hey Yeah, thats what we are doing now, I just thought there might be a more efficient way as we are always getting a lot of items in.

Thanks anyway.

There's also using the csv bulk export/import filtered by collections to get products.

Hey Paul

Thanks for the suggestion, new inventory input isn't always consistent so it would probably be more work to export and import .csv. I think I will just set the bulk editor to happen more regularly.

Thanks

No worries at all. I do like you're thinking on this though and will suggest you're feedback as a feature request to our development team for the future. It's feedback like this which helps them know what is on the mind of store owners such as yourself.

Thanks again for reaching out and asking.

Hi @Thrift2U

This hasn't been implemented. Be sure to keep an eye on the Shopify Changelog for upcoming releases and features to see if comes up there.

@Thrift2U could you elaborate on why you think you need this? why does it have be automatic or on a schedule? aren't weights being entered when the product is created?

Or passed along when a product is duplicated?

How does the bulk editor, or spreadsheets from the back office not suffice?

Okay, so I run an online website where everything is $1.00. We limit people
by the points of each item. But every item is categorized. For example a
jacket is 8 points and a shirt is 2 points. Since y’all don’t have a point
system of what we needed. we used weights. And created different shipping
options when they passed a certain level. For example 5-10 points is $9.99
& 20-50 points is $19.99. And so on

Our store doesn’t list individual items with a large quantity we list
unique items and tons of them. We have up over 1600 unique items all priced
at $1.00.

If I could simply just enter the collection that the item is in like shirts
in the shirt collection and it could apply the Weight it would save an
exponential amount of time.

All of our collections are the same weight across the board. Jackets 8
points/ 8lbs dresses 5 points/ 5 lbs shirts 2 points / 2lb when we print
the label we don’t use these weights as they’re not accurate we calculate
shipping on our own using a postage scale. We just had to go this route as
there was no other system which created a value for the categories besides
weight.

Please check out Thrift2u.com and ask me any more questions you have and I
will gladly explain more.
