Automatic discounts - letting the customer know it exists

My question is so basic I'm embarrassed to even ask it. Buy X get Y.

I've set it up and it works like it should. However when the customer has put X  items in the cart there is no warning/information that there's a discount to be had if he just adds another item.

This makes it a secret discount. 

What did I miss?

I am also having the same issue.
1. The customer just adds the X product (required to get discount) to cart thinking that Y product will be automatically added to his/her cart.
2. And after that when the customer goes to the checkout page to pay then a message is shown "[Discounted code] is not valid on the items in your cart". 
3. And there is no guide info for the customers at that time. 
4. Consequently, the customer never comes back to our store because he got nothing except wastage of time.

No doubt Shopify is the best platform for dropshippers. But Shopify must make some improvements to it.

I can see that's frustrating!

My issue is a little different as the discount itself works just fine. I just need Shopify to automatically inform the customer that there's a discount to be had by adding a Y to the X's that's already in the cart.
