Freddie, you've nailed it. Add to the list product categorization and I think you're set. Shopify is not cheap. When you start dealing with thousands of products there are certain things that you need and expect to make your job easier. The answer isn't always bolting on apps at an additional cost; at some point these things need be part of the deal. It's in these areas that Shopify falls short.
+1..... Please! I honestly am regretting coming here and spending a month setting up my store only to have the csv upload be a pain. I came from izzonet who isn't even a real company, and their cvs loading was awesome. Every possible variable was in the csv file. Or you could leave it blank and it stay blank but I need alt txt. Also, at izzonet, they had a seperate image loader. It seems like an easier thing to develop.....
Since each of our photo's obviously has a different url, you just name you photos, or tag them, the place in a zip file. In the csv upload, there is a column for img src So, for instance.....
IMG..... http://www.googlepics.com/jhdkdgkdjgdj.jpg ; Tag......... donkey11
So you would load all pics in a loader like this above
Then in the csv it would say
Item...56565 Donkey Kids Board Game etc..etc...etc.. img src........ donkey11
