Blocking referrer SPAM

We recently launched our store and after a few days of looking at our Google Analytics, "Traffic2cash.xyz" started dominating our referral traffic by a factor of 10 compared to legitimate referrers. 

After a little research, there seems to be a way to block these Referrer spammers by adding some code to the [.htaccess] file. Understandably, Shopify would not allow access to that level of modification.

Since this seems to be a wide spread problem, can Shopify address it on a system wide level?

Yes, that's an annoying problem we have as well.

You can set up filters in UA/GA… Looking up something like "filter referral spam google analytics" should get you started.

That just takes it out of the report. this still affects all user stats in google analytics, i.e bounce rate, session duration, new users and more.
it would be difficult to say that this issue does not affect ranking. 

Has there been any change in what can be done about this?
