Is there a way to build a shopify store locally, then upload it to the server. I'm not talking about just designing a theme, but build the whole thing so it is not live while I work. I use MAMP as my local server Or if you have a recommedations let me know. How do you work?

vision only allows you to design a theme.

i have no idea if it’s possible to work on a local server, but can’t you just make use of the password protection feature of shopify? that is working fine for me.

You can definitely password protect and work online, but Vision is a self contained Ruby on Rails server giving you all the same capabilities as through your store.

I’m not to sure what else you’re going to do with Shopify other than “design”. You can’t even access the application code as it resides on Shopify’s servers and is not available to the public. This is a hosted application.

Well, what I’ve had to do is register for a second store, password protect it, and use it as my test bed. I tried using Vision, but as soon as I added a new link list to my store and downloaded the code for example it broke… Also I wanted to try different aspects of html, and images, and tables in my pages, and that became too difficult.. So I’ve found having a second store really solves all that.

So I can password protect my site while I work? The whole site or just the entrance?

Is this documented anywhere?

It’s the entrance to the site. Once, you’ve put the password in, you can navigate the site no problem. You’ll find on the Preferences page under General settings at the bottom, the ability to set a password and turn it on or off…
