Cost per item

I have my CSV I am adding my products to in order to import them in bulk to my store.  I have 1000's of products and to go through each one on Shopify to add the cost per item would take too long.  Is there anyway to add the 'cost per item' to Google Sheets or Excel and upload it that way?  I have tried changing the variant 'compared at price' to 'cost per item' but that didn't work.  Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello, Jennifer!

I am not sure how open you are towards the App suggestion. If you are not, please, ignore this message, and excuse me for writing it.

But if you are open to the idea of using the app, here's how you can update the Cost Per Item for your products without having to re-import all your products - using the Excelify app. You can update just this one field if you like.

This is the tutorial which shows you how to do it: https://excelify.io/2018/10/26/shopify-product-variant-cost-per-item/

This sounds like something I could really use but just starting out with a new business where I am not live yet and a household to feed (they eat a LOT!), I can't afford the $50/month.  I will keep this app in mind for future use!  Thank you :)

Hi, Jennifer.

This is Max from the Shopify Team.

Adding a cost per item field is something that our merchants have been asking for, for a long time. Entering the cost per item is currently optional. If you choose to enter your costs, then it’s best to add the amounts to all of your existing products at the same time by using the bulk editor or a CSV import.

This can take some time to edit and upload (especially since you have such a large inventory), but if you're able to format or order your products into an appropriate order and past the values in via CSV that might be worth the time and effort up front. Breaking down the CSV into mare manageable chunks (and doing a few uploads) could also be a good route if additonal apps aren't in the budget right now.

To review, the main places to edit this field using the Shopify admin are as follows:
