How long before you think of calling it a day on your store?

Ive had my store for nearly 4 months without a sale. Ive got google ads, a facebook page and ads running, im posting on instagram, paying monthly for spocket and getting plenty of visits, but thats it. So im thinking of pulling the plug on this expensive hobby.  So how long would you keep this going?? Just feel like im haemorrhaging cash at the moment for no return.

I guess it depends if you really need the money you're spending. I think with enough small improvements over time, you can make it work.

 

Would you mind posting a link? I'll let you know if I see anything that scares me off.

Yes i can post a link, i've had it looked at before, done the changes people have recommended, but still no change oh well it cant do any harm.

It seems to be a very tough market. I will admit I am very much in the same boat, so I wouldn't consider this expert advice.. just observations;

Something I want to highlight first is if you hover over the Facebook icon at the bottom, it shows your name in the link. I can then see you listed as one of the friends. For me, this is very uncomfortable that anyone would have a virtually direct link to my personal FB so I'd change that immediately.

The page itself seems like it is set up to be a person, rather than a business as well. Good social proof can only help, but this seems off. Mind you, if I was shopping I would never bother looking at something like this. I'm really not interested in anyone's social platforms.

 

Initial impression when entering it feels a bit bland, with no call to action - something I have been told myself actually. There needs to be something to brand your website. Who are you and what do you specialise in? Why should I stay?

Looking into the first couple of collections and my first impression was 'oh god, gimmick goods. I bet they don't have rights to sell Star Wars items'. This is probably something you're going to want to look into. I'm guessing you're getting these particular items from China where they get away with this sort of nonsense, but I don't think it's actually legal to sell anything referencing Star Wars - even fan art - without permission.

This might just be me, because I did look at oberlo - but many of the items just scream cheap junk. The images do look incredible though - I just wouldn't want to buy any of it. 

After going into a couple of collections I noticed there is no designated home page button (I know it's the logo, but anyone not selling on shopify won't know that). The other thing I notice is it just seems like a couple of items in each category - it doesn't fill me with confidence. I see a phones and tech section (gimmick goods), and then a separate phone cases section and a separate laptop sleeves section. I would dump the junk and find a way to put the cases and sleeves in the same section (the actual designs you have on there are fantastic). On the subject of fantastic designs - you have really cool mugs, but just 5 of them right now. Maybe I'm just biased, but I am liking the Printful goods far more than the rest of the products. Where are you getting those designs?!

 

Have you considered building most of your products into the menu bar rather than collections for everything? If you go to a large general store online you will usually see a few hero items, some sort of offer, but then everything else is navigating the menu bar and using search. If you're set on trying to offer as many different departments as possible, this could make sense.

There is another thing I just recently found out as well.. if you have the 'buy now' button and the add to cart option on, they don't work well together. I did a test and added some items to cart, then did a 'buy it now' and it doesn't pick up anything from the cart or give me 10% off. You might want to consider removing that, if you're wanting people to buy multiple things. Also if you go to the cart and use the continue shopping feature, it takes you to a page showing all of your products. While it's not a big deal in itself, it is a bit strange I can only access that page through this single method (no other link for it).

Product reviews are an obvious catch 22.. I love the way you have it listed, I just wish there could be some data there. I'm not sure what you could do about it. I do wonder if the phone cases for example capture the ratings for any item in that category? Or a rating per design? Anyway, I'm getting side-tracked just thinking about it.

The about us could be a dedicated page with perhaps a link in the menu and the footer - the way it's jammed into the bottom doesn't look great. It's nice to see you have an address and number listed though, as well as a messaging service set up - I'm told by people who know more, that these things matter.

Thanks Richy1 for your honest and thorough review its good hear from someone elses perspective.  Ive started implementing the changes you have suggested. Ive removed the star wars stuff, i do reckon they are genuine as im getting them from spocket and hes a fully licensed seller, but just in case theyre now gone. Changed the facebook link (didnt realise my name was in the link) and putting the phone cases and laptop sleeves together i may do at some stage.  The mugs, i know theres not many, but it takes so damn long to design one on printful so ill probably do some more when ive time plus the tshirts. I didnt realise the buy it now and add to cart are dissonant, i'll remove one of them.  Put the about us into a dedicated page and has made the footer much tidier now. I know theres lack of products on some pages, but im only paying for the basic spocket which only gives you 25 products to sell (which is naff) when i can import as many products as i want from Aliexpress using oberlo for nothing.  The reviews im struggling with as i cant pull any reviews from printful or spocket and the stuff that has reviews are from aliexpress and i dont sell much from there because of the long postage times.
