How to create a customer group?

How do I create customer group? (i want to assign a trade organization to this group)

I then want to create a discount that will apply to customers in that group so they don't need to enter a discount code.

I've looked just about everywhere and can't find how to actually create a specific customer group and assign accounts to it.

Thanks in advance.

You need an app, like BOLDApps customer specific pricing or ShopFrogs Wholesaler. These create duplicate variants and hide them or show them based on the customer's log in. In BOLDApps (have not used Wholesaler much) you tag your group with a specific tag and use the app to create a pricing tier for that group. Excellent app under the circumstances but not a perfect solution (e.g. if you use an app the publishers your store, e.g. to Facebook, you can't stop the lower-priced variants from showing up).

Thanks for your reply. However I think there must be an easier way. In the discount section of shopify it gives you an option to apply discount to customers in a group but right now just has a few basic groups to choose from. Canadian orders, repeat customers, etc. In other parts of the shopify documentation it makes vague references to customer groups but I can't find anything on creating a group.

but I can't find anything on creating a group

Go to your customer panel and do a search. Saving the search will create the Group.

That's how you create a group. But you still can't effect automatic price discounts to members of the group without the app. You can make a code but it must still be applied manually. The question what about giving a specific group a specific discount without the need for  a code. Hence my answer.

Hey Standoutd, since creating a group and creating a discount for them I see that your answer applies if I want to see automatic discounts. Otherwise my group members (and only those tagged for that group) will be able to the discount code.

Your solution regarding the apps suggested is closer to what I want. I appreciate your input.

Hi, Mark. No problem. Like you, I'd love to see the option of a code auto-applying if applicable. Has lots of applications - yours and others. Would make "private sales" a breeze - go order and get your discount, no extra steps required.

Another way to handle this is to use customer tags (ie: "wholesale) and then use Liquid logic (or an app like Locksmith) to show products & collections with different prices.
