How to set up a bilingual store

I am sooooo behind reading this thread, i’ll try to catch up later this week.

Meanwhile…. I now have my french site almost completely ready and I noticed that when creating product and page handles, shopify doesn’t convert accented characters into normal characters, but uses the accented ones in the URLs. E.g.

I am not sure, but I think this might cause problems with some browsers. Any thoughts? Christina, did you run into this yet?

yo, bubbles everyone!

Kati – doesn’t do the same thing for me:

But then I don’t have a single product with an accent grave (got to call the suppliers..) and maybe they’re dealt with differently(??).

Your store is lovely, by the way! (and makes me so nostalgic for my Hungarian grandmother’s house with all the embroidered pillows)... and I notice you’ve already got some excellent French translations up!

Dan, yes, I was thinking about that too – I’m not totally satisfied with all my product names (apart from the Zing, of course!), but felt I was locked into them, because of the url-dependency.

So with a bit of luck (and lobbying – wink wink Tobi & crew!), we’ll be able to just chuck this thread into the trash and LIVE!

Kati, that shouldn’t happen at all.
I just updated what is responsible for handles, and fixed this.

Speaking of handles. We recently made an update which made handle generation a lot smarte ( ok not in Kati’s case but bear with me )

It now tries to approximate the actual character with the closest match of the ascii alphabet. For example

Cumpleaños will now be cumpleanos as expected and not cumplea%C3%B1os

Christina: Duly noted that you would be excited for the handle editing to happen :)

Daniel, it’s still happening with some of my products:

and if I change the accented character to an a, it gives a 404

I just noticed an unfortunate side effect of this method:

On the cart page, the item will be listed with the french language variant name, i.e. both the english and the french name will show up, as in:

1 x red hat chapeau rouge

Fortunately easily fixed:

In cart.liquid, instead of using the

{{item.title}} variable,
use
{{ item.product.title }}
